    • RE: What Types of Games Would People Like To See?

@ZombieGenesis said in What Types of Games Would People Like To See?:

That's my thought, honestly. I think, in theory, MH/PbtA should be a grand slam for how MU's mostly function(cooperative RP) but I think there'd be immediate natural resistance when someone used a string on their character. Players seem okay when a dice pool says they lost a round of combat and take X damage but I can see a lot of resistance to someone spending a string and trying to apply a condition to a character. Damage X is okay but telling someone "I just dredged up some crap from your past and gave you the OUTSIDER condition" would likely be met with "I'm not comfortable with that" and lots of arguments.

That said, I do think a WoD alternative would be fantastic. I've been pondering trying something using a hack of the Dresden Files Accelerated Edition rules. Gives more crunch than regular Fate Accelerated but is still fast-paced and easy to consume.

It's just another version of the "social stats are mind-control" bullshit.

If you can't buy in to the system you're playing, then why are you playing that game? Because there's nothing else around? Lame.

True, I think that Monsterhearts would have to exist on its own with the goal of trying to emulate a very specific fictional genre, like you're suggesting. As I was writing out my game idea, I figured that the core AW ruleset would probably be more effective.

That said I would absolutely love to play in a MH game. We could port it to a college campus with limited adjustment to the rules. College student politics work differently than high school politics (you wouldn't have the regular touchstones like prom and whatnot) however there are enough similarities to allow for most of the moves to function as they should. I think the main issue with attempting to port it to where the PCs are universally adults is that MH includes a lot of familial drama regarding your characters' playbooks. A family of werewolves, for example, is going to be angry when their darling hooks up with the local vamp. At a college, it's likely that the werewolf PC won't tell their family about their indiscretions with the vamp they met.

What are your thoughts on that?

@ZombieGenesis said in What Types of Games Would People Like To See?:

I think a MH game would be best set in a college town, for sure. One where the college is maybe even assimilated right into the town and caters as much to townies as to outsiders.

PbtA games should probably be small ones, not the hulking behemoths so many people seem to want their games to be.

I do think you need to add SOME point of reference if you're not doing a narrative desc, such as pictures or specific aesthetics. It's hard to understand where you are if there's absolutely nothing there? But you can absolutely insert pictures in the room desc, @krmbm has done it and can probably tell you how maybe.

      Room designation: Medbay
      Amenities level: Low
      Staff level: High
      Occupancy Limit: 16 people
Style: Clinical; white; metallic; antiseptic; square shapes with rounded edges.

Erotic MUSH except the entire world is one giant corporate office and we live there and are stressed out, and revolt with occultism and fucking. And some of the offices have been taken over by sects of anarchists who do sexy things and dance around a fire naked, with all of their calculators jailbroken to play Doom.

      So High-Rise but with occultism?

If I make a werewolf on a WoD MU, I'm playing a werewolf. Sure, there may be kinky shenanigans going on, but there might not; who knows?

If I make a werewolf on an Erotic MU, I'm definitely planning on doing kinky things with the shapeshifting and the biting and the grrrr, alpha wolf, grrr.

There's a very clear veneer that colors every intention.

It's the difference between the pizza delivery boy arriving at a sorority house in a PG-13 movie and getting macked on by a few hotties (he gets macked on, but the movie goes on with either his story or the sorority's); and the pizza delivery guy arriving at a sorority house in a porn film and getting into an orgy (the orgy is the movie; that's the point). It doesn't matter if in both stories the pizza delivery guy gets sacrificed to Cthulhu in the end -- the tone and point of the scene/movie is different.

@SquirrelTalk So this is more about openness, then? Because I find it hard to believe that people don't just do whatever they want to do in private. The ones who like fading will fade, the ones who don't won't, etc.

There's a difference between "this is a game about [supernatural horrors / superheroes / space marines / star wars / etc.], where people in private do whatever they want" and "this is a game with an explicitly sexual theme".

      I feel it's pretty clear.

@Three-Eyed-Crow said in Why no Star Trek games?:

You could just make the senior officers NPCs and have people primarily play like Ensigns - LTs.

I think the model that worked on a lot of BSG games could work for a Star Trek MU reasonably well.

While that makes a certain amount of sense, it's not Trek. Yes, in a logical universe, 90% of the Away Teams would be comprised of the lesser officers. But in Trek, it's the CO and Command Staff that go on the missions and see all the action. The Ensign/jg/LT characters are background gruntwork, unless they have an applicable specialty.

This is really more of a result of TV shows always wanting to write for "important characters" than anything else. Star Trek can easily work more logically and have the away teams be comprised of lower ranking officers.

Yeah, and especially when you get into roleplayed nonconsensual stuff. There absolutely has to be a barrier between public and private there, OR you need to make it excruciatingly clear to everyone from the start what people are getting into.

      Exactly.

And any game that is primarily-erotic/sexual in nature/theme is going to be an exploration of kinks, many of them not a lot of other players's thing. So you gotta make sure everyone consents not just to participating but also to being made to spectate/witness certain kinks.

I mean, I'm mostly in favor of people being able to post whatever logs they want. If it's erotic, just tag it with a disclaimer. But it should never be like, a culture of "post everything, everything."

@Ominous I've been reading the Cross Gen comics again and have been inspired by the myth arc of The First and the world of Mystic. It could definitely play out as a cool L&L type game,

I am more inspired by Kill Six Billion Demons' central cityworld of Throne and the demiurges who are locked in a cold war. I could also see a world where numerous covenants/guilds/houses/universities/priories/whatever are constantly jockeying for position in some sort of senate. Maybe each org has one Grandmaster who has absolute control of the org, but everyone else is slowly waiting for the Grandmaster to die to then try to take the reins.

ugh, fucking K6BD is so fucking amazing
