@thatguythere I'd love to be able to offer both because I think that'd make for a more entertaining chargen experience, but I think that'd take some bribing of a coder, I imagine it'd be a fair hassle. Probably easiest to just have the point buy, and if someone is stuck then they can always roll die on their own. I've gotten my hands on the ICON book now, so am perusing.

@thatguythere @Lithium - I'm looking specifically at this one https://greenroninstore.com/products/icons-superpowered-roleplaying-the-assembled-edition since one of my friends brought it up as a promising alternative. I'm not familiar with it at all, but it sounds like you are both familiar with it. Do you think it would work well for a MU*?

RE: Interest Gauge: City of Mist Game
@wizz I love this idea, I'm already enthused to play! Just to confirm - you would be doing all OC too, right? It's not going to be City of DC/Marvel?

RE: In development: pure OC superhero game
Typing on my phone so forgive any typos - narrative choices is good. The ability to leap and grab the chandelier and douse the enemies with arrows etc... Anyone know of any systems built for that?

RE: In development: pure OC superhero game
@ixokai Well, by the very nature of it being a superhero game it will likely be an alternate-history, unless we go with one of those 'something just happened and now people are turning into superheroes also there are aliens and magic' kinds of things. I'm into pulp and noir in the 1920s-1940s, I'm less enthused about modern city noir for the whole game. One of many subsections, certainly. I think to my mind if I'm going modern or near future I might as well offer multiple or different flavors.

RE: In development: pure OC superhero game
@TNP @Three-Eyed-Crow @Cobaltasaurus - So after input and discussion with both friends and relative strangers, I think I'm going to go for what I think is a pretty good compromise. Modern or slightly in the future. Metropolitan focus. But some kind of split grid approach where different parts of the grid are more friendly to different flavors. So one part would have that noir/mystery vibe, one part would be more shiny high tech, one part would be more for silly gadzooks hijinks, etc, without splitting things up so far that people can't interact and find RP. Maybe one big city with different neighborhoods? I'm still thinking about that one. Probably start out with just the basic city with those extra flavors just hinted at/mentioned, then actually expand as the game grows.
Game system wise, M&M3E has come up pretty strongly. I also realized I do have the GM's guide and player's hand book for the latest 3rd Ed, so am going to peruse that to see what I think. That said it's still up in the air, and I would love more input and thoughts on people's preferred systems for this stuff. I'm familiar with M&M from Crucible City, but I know it's not easy to get into for new people. I updated my original post with this too, hoping for more input from all interested parties.

RE: How did you discover your last three MU* ?
Darkwater - Word of mouth.
Valorous Dominion - MSB.
Fallcoast (Not actually playing but waiting for the Miami reboot because PEPPER MUST LIVE) - MSB. -
RE: In development: pure OC superhero game
@ixokai Good point re: the isms of the time. Those can be explosive topics and difficult to handle sensibly in a MU* environment.
@Three-Eyed-Crow I am in no way shape or form looking for those kinds of numbers, yipes. That would probably have me overwhelmed right now, honestly. My ideal would be around 20s, especially when it's around the clock so your RL timezone/sleep schedule doesn't matter, you can always find RP. That seems to be the tricky part.
@WildBaboons @faraday 1930s I think of the tv show Carnevale, the Dust Bowl, loads of poverty, war on the horizon. It's a bleaker, grimmer setting, that's for sure. But also radio, airplanes, swing music, the Golden Age of Hollywood, Art Deco, hard boiled crime fiction... It's the depressed middle child forgotten between the louder 20s and 40s.

RE: In development: pure OC superhero game
Whew, I went to sleep and woke up to a lot of interest! Thank you all. Big spammy response ahead:
@surreality - The Roarin' 20s definitely has an appeal. And there's a lot of source material to use for inspiration. I just like that early chunk of the 1900s, it seems, 20s-30s-40s. Especially in a US setting they each have very distinctinctive flavors. And not to worry, I'm not looking for anyone to sign anything, just a show of hands as it were.
@Mr.Johnson - I appreciate the thought very much! Let me know how the rest of your staff feels - no hard feelings if it's a no, I'm just happy you were willing to offer.
@Lithium - I mean, I mostly play World of Darkness in all its various forms these days, plus other games where you might die, so I don't think that's a concern. But could you let me know how you define pure consent? It's been a while since I heard the term.
@Kairos - That looks awesome! I may have to throw some cash their way.
@DeadEmpire - Sweet, another vote for "anything OC is good", thank you! And yes, it would be all pure original characters. OC all the way, no DC, no Marvel, etc.
@TNP - Understood! As I asked the others, would you be wiling to expand on why? The more feedback I get the more helpful it is.
@Cobaltasaurus - M&M is what I was used to back when I was involved in the Crucible City stuff, the only reason I haven't leapt to it is because I heard that the editions in the ten years+ since then has changed a lot? So I'd need to take a look. But mute librarian with shadow powers sounds like a really fun concept, of course I'd love to see you play!
@Ganymede - I will be happy to take you up on the offer of assistance! Judging by @Wizz input, it sounds like City of Mist while very appealing in its own right brings its own setting flavor with the system, which makes me a bit hesitant. I'd rather use something that is easily adaptable, and it sounds like we'd need to cut at least a chunk or two out of CoM. What do the two of you think about M&M, are you familiar with the latest edition of it? And Wizz, I definitely think you should start a new thread so more people can brainstorm on that, including myself.
For a different game I think it would be super cool, and I'd be genuinely interested in playing in it.
@TheOnceler - I'm a little puzzled, why should the fact that there aren't any OC superhero games make me choose a modern setting? That one goes over my head, please clarify that some? You're another vote for M&M, which is what I am familiar with from the old Crucible City game, though we used the first edition (I think), and the latest one is apparently a bit different so I'd need to check it out. Gothic Horror Superhero Game sounds amazing, I'd play there!
@faraday - Well, @ixokai first stated that 30s-40s wasn't something he was into, hence my assumption his specification of no 30s also applied to 40s. But that's me assuming things, and you make a fair point that 30s is less represented in pop culture. I like 20s-30s-40s, but as mentioned this is an interest check as I continue to mull things over. That's why I'm looking for feedback as to what people like/dislike/would like/wouldn't like, and I appreciate all the responses!
@Seraphim73 - I know right? It's a lovely spectrum of flavors that ranges from intrigue and mystery across the spectrum to robot Nazi mutants on jets. Not to say you couldn't have that in a modern or future setting, of course.

RE: In development: pure OC superhero game
@three-eyed-crow Absolutely. I know I've seen some set ups where the basic theme and setting where once that had me drooling, but the actual execution made me run for the hills, so definitely agree. Why 30s/40s is because I personally love those settings for stories. I watch movies from those eras on a regular basis, and noir and pulp are in my top three favorite genres overall. But it's not a must have, hence the interest check. Plus depending on the game I could always have a sub section/part of the city or something that has that vibe.
-
RE: In development: pure OC superhero game
@ixokai So you'd just prefer to play in something where you don't have to research before playing to feel comfortable, I can understand that! Thank you for the feedback, I'll add it to my pros and cons list.
-
RE: In development: pure OC superhero game
@Lemon-Fox @ixokai @WildBaboons - I appreciate the feedback! So so far, three out of three say yay OC eh/boo to 30s/40s. Would you guys be willing to expand a bit more? I.e if it's historical in general that's bleh or that particular part of history. It'll be helpful as things continue to percolate in my brain.
-
RE: In development: pure OC superhero game
@lemon-fox I could do modern day with a slight alternative reality/cyberpunkish twist to allow for things like SCIENCE! and such, depending on the exact setting I end up with. I usually like d) all of the above when faced with multiple choices.

In development: pure OC superhero game
So at six pages and counting, I've run out of space for all the ETAs on this thing. I'm also thinking this is gone from interest check to 'I think I'm actually developing this thing'. So, here's the current status:
It's going to be modern day or near future. Big metropolis in a fictional new offshoot off of the Washington state coast, a made up county that stretches out into the Pacific in a wing-shape. In it is the big city that is the main setting for the game. There's also going to be a new fictional mountain range and stuff because Pacific Northwest, but I'll figure out those details later.
The city will have neighborhoods, but not with any hard limit as to who can play what where - more simply realistic, like how any big city's downtown will have a different feel from the harbor area, etc. It will have a grid with rooms etc, though I haven't yet decided on the actual layout I want. I think that's still for later.
There's going to be a few permanent pocket dimensions as well, one of which goes into a noir-ish 1940s little alternative reality of the big city. The city (maybe the world? undecided) also has temporary pocket dimensions/gateways open up now and then, causing havoc and mayhem or miraculous goodness or just weirdness.
Outside of that small piece of the planet, Earth itself is the equivalent of Australia as far as other aliens are concerned. Massive cred to @Flitcraft for this idea. It's a place used as a dumping ground by various stellar polities. They drop criminals and wannabe Napoleons and various undesirables here, with the understanding that the few that aren't killed by the native species (i.e, humans) still won't be able to get off the backwater piece of rock. I am debating if there might or might not still be the equivalent of local 'space cops' touring the area on a regular basis to make sure there's no equivalent of life boats gunning for Saturn or such.
I am going to take the time today and tomorrow and really dig into ICONS. I'm currently looking between it ( this ICONS to be specific since there's multiples: https://greenroninstore.com/products/icons-superpowered-roleplaying-the-assembled-edition ) and good ol' M&M3E.
As far as character concepts go, power origins etc will be up to the players, but I will offer some pre-made options that should also help foster RP hooks. There's an evil corporation out there that likes to try and create mutants for them to control, super villains to like to create robots/summon elsedimensional or mystical beings etc, an unknown genetic strain that sometimes becomes dominant and changes the human into an Advanced Human, the destined wielder of the Force of Blah, etc, etc. Probably somewhere along the lines of five to seven or so more common sources.

RE: Valorous Dominion
I'm excited to report that a) Lucrezia is in the final room of chargen (I think this is a speed record for me) and b) I got to talk with the one other existing member of House Ganza last night, Matilde, and she is on board with my ideas for the House.
So Valorous' Dominion's own Addams Family/Lovecraft flavored House is go! Tonight after work I'm going to finish the family crest.
Oh and finish chargen I guess
ETA: Oh and the place is starting to jump. I'm seeing fairly regular numbers of 20+, and people are mainly active and on grid from what I see. Also still very friendly and nice OOC vibe.

RE: What Is Missing For You?
@carex Isn't that oWoD in a nutshell? Though if you have your game cyclically restart annually or biannually that would be a slightly different twist. I would be concerned on how to keep the game from being turned into beer and pretzels 'nothing we do matters' on an OOC level, though, if you were looking for a more serious roleplay atmosphere.

RE: Kay's Playlist: Crucible City (first one),TR & HM & Darkwater etc
Updated to add new character! I guess I needed a little Goth and a little Dark Ages in my gaming.

RE: Valorous Dominion
I'm in character generation on this game, making my bit Lucrezia who's going to be the Head of House of House Ganza.
Other players on the game have been very friendly, staff is very fast to respond and I love the setting and theme.
