@thenomain I dunno, we've worked to create cooperative stories from the get go, surely we can make it so people can read the whole of an aspect and why it is a thing and work together for why it would do something. After all, the mechanic is, take a fate point and the negative happens. If you don't agree with the negative being tied to that aspect, don't take the fate point.

RE: Alternate Game Systems
@thenomain I think get rid of the spend a fate point mechanic being tied to aspects being used against you. Every 'plot' scene maybe people have their left over Fate in fate points to spend, or, make it so spending down to 0 fate is the norm and everyone gets like 3 fate points to use over the course of the scene, plot, week, whatever.
Then you can have it be set so that there is advancement based on time or plot involvement or a combination of the two so and you could then curb power creep by making it take longer/more plots for each successive advancement point available.
Of course if people use your aspects against you, then maybe you do still get a fate point to spend but it's only for the scene/plot.
Other idea is to remove needing to spend fate points entirely (I know there are stunts that require them for example) so that if there is an aspect that's been added anyone can tag it and people automatically remove one aspect from themselves per round and if they spend their action to recover/remove aspects they could get rid of another 1 (or more).
Obviously there's some balancing to do here, but the biggest hangup with Fate not really working in a MU* environment is the reliance on Fate points to be 'cool'.

@alzie Rats. No love for ze riggers. Though, depending, might be possible to do a combo rigger/decker, just won't be novahot with the decking since won't be able to get all the best tech.

@alzie What archetypes (if any) are people wanting?

RE: Alternate Game Systems
@thenomain Well right, which is why I was considering something else entirely. The idea being it wouldn't be hard to code up a random deck of 'cards' and then when initiative is rolled, it deals out a 'hand' which could then be played. Would it be ideal? No, not really. Honestly as far as combat systems go, ideal for this environment is probably square in the lap of MUD's and MOO's but those have their own issues.
I know a lot of people don't like it, but outside of Fate points themselves, I do think Fate actually works pretty well in this format, in my opinion. A few hacks could probably do it well, one of the advantages of the Marvel TSR game is that it too could actually be coded, no such thing as multiple actions, defense could be worked in...
But it has other flaws.
The idea of this thread though wasn't just to comment on my idea, but to hear other ideas other than what we've already got.

RE: Alternate Game Systems
@thenomain I have not looked at them no, I have heard of them, being bandied about here but everyone who mentioned them always said they wouldn't translate well so I've never invested much time into them.

RE: Alternate Game Systems
@faraday Ahh I have no exposure to that cards of falkenstein or whatever it is, was more just shooting ideas out there for stuff that might be more original and less... well min-max sheety.
-
RE: Alternate Game Systems
@faraday It's not semantics because dice are a completely random system and you get to choose how the cards are played. Sure you might not have control over what cards you get, but if you get a bunch of cards you don't like? Don't use them. You're not required to play a card, but you do have some agency in what cards you do play.
Or instead of making it random, everyone gets a /set/ amount of cards, 1 of each type.
I like random systems, because randomizing things is good, but with cards it's not pure chance every time you try to do anything at all.

Alternate Game Systems
All the talk of different systems than generic WoD this or that makes me wonder how a game system based off cards would do. Every 'scene' you are dealt a number of cards and the cards are random in that they may be 'succeed' 'succeed with style' 'overwhelming success' 'fail' 'fail badly' 'epic fail' type of things, and depending on which cards you play on any given 'round' could determine the outcomes.
So like if you are dealt 5 cards in a scene (arbitrary number) it could result in like 1 succeed, 2 fails, 1 epic fail, and 1 overwhelming success.
Every action you attempt you can choose to leave the results up to a straight up stat/trait comparison, or you can play a card. The thing is the cards are without a doubt the best way to go about things because they give perks for using them.
Take epic fail, you play the card when you try to do something, and it rewards the player somehow, maybe with xp, or cookies, or something like hero points that can be used. If you play epic success then you succeed but it rewards the person you played the card against.
Might be interesting thought exercise here.
Any other alternate game systems besides standard dice rolls that interest people?

When I first learned of this:

I was like, noooo whyyyyyyyy?!?!?!?!!
Then I actually watched it, and am... cautiously optimistic.

RE: The Mega Shadowrun Denver Shout
Don't have any of my old characters there, but I am considering rebuilding my orc heavy gunner, she who was first person to kill another player.
Asshole shouldn't have shot me in the stomach with a Manhunter.

RE: Potential Game / Temperature Read
@auspice Damn you.
Damn you for making me want to code an actual Ultimate Powers Random Chargen again... Damn you to hell.
Not really.
Maybe I'll break down and actually code this up.

RE: Yes! More Micro-transactions! (Activision, WB Games and EA appreciation thread)
@Arkandel WoW is free to play up to level 20 or maybe even 60 now, I don't recall.

RE: Yes! More Micro-transactions! (Activision, WB Games and EA appreciation thread)
Buy to play is dying? No. It's just not as absurdly profitable as it was. It is still profitable if the company is ran properly.
GW2, still profitable.
WoW, still profitable.
Hell even original EQ and EQ2 are still profitable. The ones that aren't profitable as the ones that are closing.
f2p/p2w though, it grabs at the fast and easy money, which there is a lot of so it is more profitable. -
RE: New Game to Play
@autumn Which has the exact same staff as City of Hope.
Enjoy Honeybadger.

RE: Yes! More Micro-transactions! (Activision, WB Games and EA appreciation thread)
@insomnia Clearly my life path is failing me. I must learn to code a silly app p2w so I can make 750K a /day/.

Can't recall where the free games thread is, but Humble Bundle has Civ 3 for free for the next 36 hours or so

RE: Your Opinions of These Games
Fate's Harvest: Couldn't get into it, cuz they allowed VAS so never tried.
F&L: Hated their idea with the whole guest stars who are more powerful than regular people who didn't pretend to earn their sheet somewhere else.
Eldritch: Liked Eldritch, just had crazy hard time finding people for my pack.
Dragon Age MUSH: Never played it, generally dislike MU's based on RPG's cuz the writing in the MU is never as good as the game. Go play the game.
Battle Fantasia: Not a fan of magical girls.
Dream Chasers: In general, dislike multi-theme mashups.
