I still kinda want to see a Lords and Ladies style game that's either High Fantasy or High Sci-Fi, with plenty of plotting and intrigue.

This is the niche where Fifth Kingdom fit, and is sorely missed.

I still have the DB and could bring it back up, but I'd need some help. There is a pretty big underlying political element (why the setting was chosen) that is more convince your fellow players not something coded in. No one made a move, but theoretically a player should be able to move to the top, I was more focused on the other Fifths and them wanting to stomp the PC Fifth.

@bored said in Serious Question About Making A MU:

@Packrat This is how I ended up feeling about FS3's combat. Its very streamlined and easy to run, but the limited design of it had an effect of homogenizing not just the different sorts of encounters on a single game, but combat scenarios across all FS3 games, regardless of genre. Which turned me off a lot of them.

That said, @Arkandel is right and manually rolled combat is atrocious nearly to the point of making games unplayable. If your system is less common (ie not WoD), it stands a good chance of actually ruining your game (because you get the usual slowness + the slowness of people who don't know the system at all the in the first place). So in most practical scenarios I would bite the bullet and settle for generic automated combat over more flavorful manual in most cases.

I think in part, and could just be me, a lot of FS3 places haven't utilized the combat to its fullest. There's a lot more to it than meets they eye and some runners seem to accept it at face value and other than managing NPCs, its just running turns. I've had it set up to run airship/seaship battles, folks have used 'vehicles' as troops/battallions to have PCs operate as field commanders in charge of (operating) the troops. Not long ago on Fifth Kingdom, I used vehicles to run turtle vs wall combat (one of the medics on the wall took splinter/impact damage and some focus was on non-medics figuring out how to help them before the wall broke and the fort was invaded).

I imagine Evennia may be the same, combat goes by the numbers but its not fully tapped into for the versatility it can provide.

some kinda random scene set generator in some of the more public rooms to help people who do the whole "wanna rp? What's your idea?"

I don't recall if it was on Calaveras or 5k, but I pondered the random rp card (like a dance card, that gives random partners (active when the card is generated at least) and a random idea; like 'become a thief for the day with NAME'. Folks could run with that, steal something on purpose, accidentally walk off with something, steal some pies, steal kisses, whatever. There used to be old plot generators floating around that I wanted to borrow from but no one has links to the code or offered to share (the ones I've mostly seen a player could +plotidea and get Mr VILLIAN kidnaps VICTIMS from the LOCATION, it is a ruse in his plot against Ms VILLIAN ... and people could use it or borrow from it as fitting).

Maybe a dance/card plot generator would be good for Ares as a plugin. I may look into this, I've time these days.

I would expect more language about story/plot continuation and less about how polyamory is approached in RL.

I think its more that writing is a mutual sport, if we're collaborating on a story and I don't want curve balls, am I in the wrong. I mean with trusted players I know, they can throw any curve ball they want, but as mutual writers making a story together there has to be some trust?

You may be right for some people. I think for others this stuff cuts a little too personal or close to home. That it's all about "good writing partners" is a decent mantra, but when the end result is more akin to posting his text messages to his mother's Facebook and putting up an entry on "Dont Date Him Girl" Dotcom...I'm not so convinced.

That example at least is easy to see creeper and a reason I do not exchange personal info with folks on-line (except that I'm from Omaha, but try to find me out of 800K+ folks in the area). I don't even know where this topic is going with doxing or shaming, I just think its a common courtesy to be like 'hey, this char might be a cheater, that's not gonna cause drama' or whatever. Some people don't like that blind-side, though yes, posting to my mom about my character cheating is like nuclear strike blind sided; rest assured we'll probably have a laugh about it, my mom and I, but its beyond bad form, its creeper-tastic.

@RDC You implied this was a monogamy problem, which I responded too. I'm not focusing on anything other than on a game, nothing to do with RL, I think its a courtesy to be open with people you RP with for the reasons @Ganymede said as well.

No one is arguing for monogamy that I know of? I am not arguing for this, you do you on game or otherwise, that wasn't my focus. I have my RL reasons that has no relation to online RP, it usually involves building up trust/STDs and/or jealous others with guns, which is a thing where I live, most of that is avoidable on games as far as I know (until I'm directly linked up by a port in my spine).

@RDC said in The ethics of IC romance, TS, etc:

This whole thread is yet another reason why monogamy -astounds- and -confuses- me. I don't do it IC or IRL, and it kind of solves all these problems.

I don't think this thread said its monogamous-specific. Doesn't the textbook definition of polyamorous include 'with the consent of all partners'? Whether one abides by that or not is sort of the question.

Personally, I feel this would be the same as GM's changing something about the IC world without telling the players. Like halfway through the save the bank of New York thread, the GM drops out, 'oh yeah, we decided NYC is blown up, we forgot to say but you can't play there.'

And yes, if players are consenting to have polyamorous characters together, have at it. I do agree though, that it might be too close to home for some folks, their partner/spouse/whatever is cheating on them, I don't think its nice/fair to do this to them without them realizing it when the are doing pretendy fun times for fun and this isn't fun for them. Let them have the option to not play out a 'I caught you cheating', 'oh well, I'm polyamorous, deal with it' or to just move on mutually or whatever.

Again my apology, but are we're sort of suggesting duplication of names doesn't happen or shouldn't (California, Derby ... Derby NY ... Derby Ohio ... Derbyshire Estates, Kentucky ... Derbyshire Rd, Derby, Connecticut ... )? I'm sorry it feels weird. If we want to discuss fictitious places named after real places or name appropriation (purposeful or accidental) of location names, I'm sure others might be willing to weigh in in the mildly constructive area of the forums.

    • RE: Derbyshire Estate

@Packrat It is in a fictitious location called Derbyshire. It is implied that the focus is on the residents of this Derbyshire and their stewardship of Earth/humanity/monster-kind.

The setting and the physical location are discussed in several locations. From the main page, 'Our setting is modern Earth (present day), though Derbyshire is in a realm of its own. '

Theme overview is more OOC to explain it is dark super hero supernatural with some references to help correlate it to something known (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Hellboy, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children). There is a theme file on that page for 'Derbyshire' that explains more about the fictitious location.

The Derbyshire page reiterates where the fictitious Derbyshire is: 'Derbyshire stands as bastion over earth, not quite inline with the physical world, resting somewhere in the beyond itself where it can guard against other intrusions as well.' and next paragraph, 'Physically in a realm between worlds, Derbyshire is composed of over 2,000 acres of space that includes ...'

I am sorry it does not directly say 'Derbyshire exists in a dimension that is not quite earth, but is accessible through ley lines and other means of crossing dimensions'. I wrote the theme more flavorful in context of how a character may understand, implying other 'realms' are other worlds or other dimensions. I did not write this using dimensional terminology, I will add this later today.

My second apology that it is a real location, this is my fault. I found Derby by searching unique surnames and ran with it instead of doing due diligence to find the real location. However, theme implies it existed on earth once before it was 'transplanted', I don't know the history of Derbyshire and Derby UK, but its typical with a lot of locations (noble estate, updated in 18th century to Palladian style architecture, nearby small 'village' where the common folks lived that served the estate/lord). It might further confuse things but Derbyshire Estates is also a location in Kentucky, US. Sorry our fictional location uses real world location names.

In Derbyshire lives the monsters that protect humanity. These monsters stand vigil against the terrors of the night that would threaten earth. Wayward souls themselves, lost or without homes, they seek to protect that which they see as good. Derbyshire stands to protect those hunted by other monsters and even humans while also training those that desire to stand up against that darkness that threatens to extinguish the light.

Derbyshire is a dark fantasy story telling collaborative that includes game elements (FS3, we uses Ares). We are focused on character exploration through these stories and personal exploration supplemented by ongoing plots and adventure. Staff hopes to create a safe environment to allow players to explore these concepts through role-playing on-line and assist where they can in discovering and telling these stories of our players' characters. We are lightly a super hero/dark comic genre but our primary focus is the preternatural setting we have created.

Note: Definitely a work in progress, details still being added, it will flush out more as we move forward. This is beta, things could definitely change at this point especially around combat, but theme-wise we're opening the slate minimally with enough to get running.

@Admiral said in Staff scrutiny during CGen:

@Lotherio That is incorrect. Staff's role is to ensure that not only does the player have a good time, but also to ensure that the player having their good time doesn't infringe on the good times of other players.

This is all in context as the staff roll in CG, per the OP.

If a player makes some concept that infringes on others fun, and the others stop playing with them, and then they do not have fun ... then staff failed to ensure the player has a good time.
