I noticed today that my beard had gotten a bit unruly. So because I like to keep my beard neat, short, and trimmed, I decided that before my usual shower in the evenings, I would trim it down, shower, then shave.

I go upstairs, and picked up my clippers without really checking to make sure that the guard was on it, that lets me adjust the levels. Nope, didn't think about it, and just turned it on. I noticed right away after the first stripe, the length of exposed cheek and stood looking in the mirror in mild shock and horror, which only then turned to annoyance, given my lack of awareness.

I mourned the loss of my glorious and beautiful beard, but there was little I could do. So now I've had to go back to the goatee until it grows back in.

Nothing horrible, just really annoying, especially when it could've been easily prevented.

@Three-Eyed-Crow said in Web-based MU poll:

One of the things I like about my MU client actually is the sense of separation, weirdly enough. I generally play with Firefox open and a bunch of tabs going but I can also...not. I can just cut myself off a bit, like I do when I'm playing any other sort of video game, and open nothing but the client. It's kind of nice and feels less busy.

I'm not sure if this is what @Monogram is talking about and I can certainly just use my browser for less BS at any given time. This is one of those things that's the fault of the user rather than the fault of the thing itself. But it is one of those ephemeral things that makes me rather like having a separate piece of software that I play on, even if I recognize that clients are alienating to newbs.

ETA: That said, I'm still excited about the idea of a game that's entirely web-based. It feels like the way forward and absolutely would cut down the barrier for entry that's keeping new players out of the hobby. I'm just trying to put my finger on why I like my MU client, in addition to all the centralization for real-time RP stuff I think telnet games do quite well.

This is more or less what I was trying to say. With my browser, say, Firefox or Chrome, I tend to have a bunch of tabs open, and having a MU browser tab would only add to that. I like how they're both separate from each other. And even something as small as how my icon lights up in my menu bar telling me I have new activity.

That being said, I'm aware of how clients are can simply be a gate for getting new people into the hobby. Back in 2006, when i first started MUing, I can remember how hard a time I had getting used to Simple MU at first. There was a learning curve involved. That being said, it didn't take long to get used to it, but looking back now I can see how it can be even more so, considering that tel-net stuff is bordering on archaic if it's not already.

While I would say that I would be willing to play on a browser-based MU, I doubt it would be my top option. Likely, I'll stick to tel-net based clients and I have no illusions that one day that might be phased out entirely.

Y'know, until we all get plugs put into the base of our skulls and start wholly living in VR.

I dunno. Yeah, tel-net clients might be ancient in terms of stuff, but it's not like there's anything inherently wrong with them. Or maybe that's just a thought of 'if it's not broke don't fix it' kind of thing.

I like my MU clients and playing something from an inherently a browser window just seems a little strange to me. That could also be me sitting on my porch and shaking my cane at things.

I'm not saying it would be a /horrible/ change, but at the same time, I dunno if it's something that I would use. Already use my browser for enough stuff as it is.

@Auspice The movie was a bastardized retelling of the comic stories. And yeah, I appreciate the sentiment, but the execution was done so poorly.

@Miss-Demeanor You know, if it wasn't for the PG 13 rating in the first one, it wouldn't of been that bad.

Personally, if we're going in that vein, I'd be down with a Predators type. Because that movie was awesome.

@Auspice Isn't that just replaying the story of Aliens at that point?

Not that I'm COMPLAINING. I'm not, seriously, I'm not.

You know you would love the fuck out of a game inspired by the Alien franchise, but tweaked to be more compat long-term (I mean, the movies kind of make a thing of 'one or two of us were lucky to get out alive').

Yes, I love it so vigorous and hard, like a one night stand. Considering the events I like to run(and I point to the few horror ones I ran on 5W that I still look fondly on), that'd be right up my alley dark sci fi Lovecraftian horror stuff.

@SG I was always more concerned with other NPCs doing something stupid and drawing the horror to us.

But yes, the fact that just about anything could bring the alien to you bordered on OP. Like the damn thing had godlike hearing. But only in regards to YOU, not the other nitwits on the station.

      @Auspice Or hell, Alien Isolation.

I /still/ have a hard time playing that game because that damn thing can pop out at any given moment and eat my face off.

I think a generational colony ship game would be really fun. A giant colony ship that's been traveling for a couple hundred years or more, and the people living on it have just arrived at their colony planet.

Then the horror to realize the place they were going was already settled. "Oh yeah, a couple years after you left, we had a breakthrough with hyperspace technology..."

That would be cool as hell.

I like FS3. I think new version is leagues better than the current one, but that one is only being used on one game currently

I plan on using the new version of FS3 when it becomes open to use. Much more flexible and optimizable then the original one.

So I'm going through the set up and I'm a little bit in over my head.

I had to reset the root password, which it made me do and I did, but now I get something that says:

      root<dropletname>: ~#

Not really sure what I put there and I can't find anywhere that explains it.

      I cast necromancy.

So I've taken it upon myself to actually try and set something up for a game, because I believe we need more games that are not WoD(no offense to the WoD lovers of the world, but I do like my fantasy).

Thing is, I would like to use this guide to set up Penn an whatnot, but I'm likely going to try using FS3(I would love to use Ares, but @faraday says it's not ready yet). That being said, how would I be able to put in FS3 on Penn. Is there something different you have to do?

I am not generally a fan of mint, peppermint in particular can go fuck right off. But wintermint, goddamn do I love it.

@SG said in General Video Game Thread:

I was in the beta(or super early FTP release, I forget which), too, but got to the grinding hell of the mid level 20s. That saved me from the game. I've heard they fixed that stretch of the game, but the endless wind sprint fetch quests of the middle of the game really left a bad taste in my mouth.

The first 20 levels was fantastic, though, I'm tempted to jump back in and take another swing at it.

With the current 250% XP boost until April 10th, you can do just class quests and still hit level 20-25 by the time you're off the starting planet. No need for grinding at all!

What I've been recommending is to do ALL the quests on the starting world, even the Heroics (once you get your first companion), then do nothing but class quests and Heroics on every world after. You can hit 56-60 by the end of Chapter 3 if you use your xp boosters they drop on you now and then for the Heroic missions. Doesn't hurt to buy up the Story/Explore bonuses in your Legacy either, but not necessary. I've got a Gunslinger that's about to hit 70 and I'm just past the prologue for Shadow of Revan. Didn't even do any of the Makeb stuff.

This is legit. I've been doing only Class and Heroic quests and I have my smuggler at level 52 and I'm still in Chapter two.

@Auspice I started playing SWTOR because I found it for 15 bucks for a digital download and got pretty sucked into it.

I blame this mostly on @Miss-Demeanor because she couldn't stop talking about how great it is. So I got it and have been enjoying the hell out of it. I seem to suffer from peer pressure to keep throwing my wallet at my PC.

I always wondered if there was a game that wasn't called Mass Effect that could make me think "RP? MUs? What are those things?" Well, I found it.
