It's probably best just to wait and see until folks have had the chance to calm down and think about things before anyone makes any assumptions about what that should or shouldn't look like. Discussing/arguing it now is rather putting the cart before the horse, I think.

    • RE: Recipes and Shit

Life stories go on recipe pages with the recipes mixed in because recipes themselves can't be copyrighted (this isn't the right word, I don't think, but the recipe equivalent) and protected from direct copy/paste use by other people on their recipe website, UNLESS they're embedded in text; if they're part of the text, they're much safer. Plus, search engine optimization -- the more key words, the higher it's going to show up in the list when you search for a recipe.

Food bloggers also like to get paid for the work they do.

      @greenflashlight

It's an interesting study to be sure, but I'd love to see the same data collected about in-person meetings, and see the comparison of the impacts. Knowing it's harmful is good, but I didn't get a sense that the study touched on whether that's "more harmful" than other ways of doing things, or "less harmful".

I really hope that a bunch of employers don't grab onto that study as proof that WFH is unhealthy and try and move it back to all in person meetings and such.

I apologize, but I don't understand how that makes a difference. If It's PTO that's used for being sick, and you're rewarding people for not using PTO at all, then...it's rewarding people for coming to work sick, whether you call it Sick Leave, PTO, or lollipop time.

      In Ohio
      ...

Ah, sorry. Did not realize the OP was in Ohio.

As for rewarding people for not using their leave, I'm not sure how to get around your accusation.

It's not an accusation? It's just fact. Rewarding people for not using sick leave encourages them to come in sick. Paying MORE for your sick leave the more of it you have not used (which is what is going on here as per the OP on the topic; you get more money for your sick leave the more sick days you have not used) is significantly worse than cashing out at the end of employment/the year (which I also think is a TERRIBLE idea, though not quite AS bad). ESPECIALLY if you're only paying at a level that keeps people utterly desperate (like teachers).

Ohio is WEIRD for having separate sick leave AND cashing it out -- that is NOT normal; I have honestly never heard of cashing out sick leave at the end of the year; only PTO or Annual or Vacation, specifically because of the problems with rewarding sick leave not being taken. I would be REALLY interested in the data regarding communicable diseases in public service in that state, tbh. I imagine it would make a statistically significant difference, though I also expect they haven't studied it. (The impact of cashing out sick leave on the transmission of disease isn't something that's going to make anybody any sort of money. Sigh.)

eta: I'm a little irritated about this in general; we've had multiple people show up in person to work now while actively symptomatic with COVID. My (high risk) boss got it from one of them and was out for a month and a half, and now one of my other (high risk) coworkers (one of our few required in office folks) is down with it, too. I cannot imagine how I would feel if it turned out that my kid's teacher gave my kid COVID because they couldn't afford to take the day off (were my kid still in school). There's inherent risk from other kids and a whole host of other things, but it would be AWESOME if we could not add "people are trying to hide their symptoms and working anyway to avoid getting financially dinged" to the risk factors.

If it was a true desire for understanding and education folks would be doing their research rather than trying to convince us that it's more important to make men feel better about the conversation than it is to actually have the conversation. Fuck you.

I feel the same. I've seriously considered stopping work on my game, and removing the soapbox from my bookmarks over all of this.

I'm not going to not do my game or quit mushing or anything, but I'm definitely reconsidering my levels of general community involvement right now. Mostly, I guess it's all been really eye-opening as to how and why this shit happens.

Yeah, I live in the Pacific Northwest, land of the rain. People here can't drive in the rain. They can't drive in the sunshine, either. Or at night. Or....yeah. The only time they can drive is when it's light and overcast.

My peeve is working for the fucking government and having to deal with the stupidly unethical behavior of other people without being able to do anything about it (unless I want to lose my job). And then venting to my mother, and being 'reminded' at length that that's just how government is and if I can't cope with corruption, I probably shouldn't be in public service.

I guess my real peeve is that she's right. It's seriously fucked up.

I like Red Rose! My grandmother drank it, so it comes with a healthy dose of happy memories and general nostalgia.

Otherwise I'm all Earl Grey, don't really care on the brand, generally. Grocery store tea serves me just fine. Though there is also some really good cucumber stuff I used to get that isn't carried here anymore.

I so totally second or third or w/e the statement about Luke Cage. Hot damn, that show is fucking amazing. It's not as brutal as Jessica Jones was (thank god), but SO GOOD. Entertaining as hell, super badass.

Crazy medical things that should not happen to me happening to me anyway. -.- But! On the bright side, my doctor is getting involved with the crazy stuff happening at my work, I get a couple of weeks vacation (damnit he wouldn't let me go back tomorrow I waaaaaanted) and the medication I got put on as a result of said craziness finally dealt with the symptoms we have been trying to figure the fuck out for months now. I also can't put more than 5 pounds of pressure on my one arm, which means I don't have to cooooooooook or carry things or be anything but a pretty princess for a few weeks. Still. Not worth it! STUPID BODY BEING FALLIBLE.

@Luna I'd been on Ibuprofen for chronic pain and it was working so good, treating an old injury that there is no fixing; I've been at MMI for 20 years. I even had a second medicine to deal with the trashing of my stomach.

It was pretty hilarious in the hospital, I have to admit. I asked the nurse for some Ibuprofen and he reacted like I'd asked for heroin or something. NO. NO YOU CAN'T HAVE THAT. He called my doc to confirm and came back and was all 'we can give you this horrible opiate in your IV, but no Ibuprofen for you!'

It's just like...really? I am here trying to find any avenue to avoid narcotics and it's preferable to inject me with that craziness than...ibuprofen. Thank god I'm allergic to morphine and you can't give me that. Okay, okay, I get the point, NSAIDs are bad for me. It's amazing how limited the options actually are.

@Sunny Try smoking CBD strains, oils in particular. Although some tolerance will need to be established for medical means to work with a clear head, they impact the mental state least because CBD is the pain-killing component of cannabis, while THC gets you high. My favorite strain for headaches and body aches: Harley Quinn. Great in a vape pen, though for professional/medical use, I recommend investing in an errlectric nail so you don't burn too much butane when dabbing away. Live Resin is best.

I'll check in with my doctor and see if he'll rx me to go shop at the med supply store. instead of the recreational stores. The shop I go to only has one high CBD strain and it's not great. Definitely worth looking into, though. Thank you.
