      Wow. That kid sounds like he should get some sort of good Samaritan recognition or something. That's awesome.

      Good things for me: I get out of the toxic hellhole I was working in as a reasonable accommodation for my new disability. This is like, THE BEST THING EVER.

    • Amazon & Amazon Smile (and Homeless Backpacks)

      I am pretty sure everyone around here probably shops on Amazon once in a while at least. They have this thing, Amazon smile, that makes a donation to the charity of your choice whenever you purchase eligible items. Log in to smile.amazon.com instead of amazon.com, and you can choose what charity. If you don't have one, please search for Homeless Backpacks in Lacey, WA or Olympia, WA -- I don't remember which it's listed as. I can provide more info on the charity if needed, but they're a great group. They feed local homeless high schoolers, the group most likely to be in circumstances where they're unwilling (or unable) to deal with the safety net of public services (a lot of them have simply left foster care or the like).

      This doesn't impact your purchase prices or anything, it's just Amazon letting its customers choose where the company's charitable donations go.

      My family is going to be able to keep me from becoming homeless until I can go back to work. Yay. Here, have a poem. This poem qualifies as a good thing:

      The Thing Is, by Ellen Bass

      to love life, to love it even
      when you have no stomach for it
      and everything you've held dear
      crumbles like burnt paper in your hands,
      your throat filled with the silt of it.
      When grief sits with you, its tropical heat
      thickening the air, heavy as water
      more fit for gills than lungs;
      when grief weights you like your own flesh
      only more of it, an obesity of grief,
      you think, How can a body withstand this?
      Then you hold life like a face
      between your palms, a plain face,
      no charming smile, no violet eyes,
      and you say, yes, I will take you
      I will love you, again.

      @Bobotron Me too.

      http://www.king5.com/story/news/local/2015/04/27/north-thurston-high-school-shooter/26449025

      --

      Everyone, including the kid with the gun, was saved by the teacher's immediate action. It is worth mentioning that while Mr. Olsen is the one that actually got there first, the principal, the security officer, and at least one other adult were sprinting in the direction of the gunshots rather than away to do the same thing. We don't know how bad it could have been. Think about that next time you're making a decision that relates to our public school teachers.

      The child in question did explain to the police that he did not plan on hurting anyone and was just attempting death by cop, being suicidal. It's why he was shooting at the floor/ceiling. Which is still dangerous, but the kid didn't know that.

      Please remind your children that if one of their friends starts talking about suicide, it is better to tell somebody. It's not a break of their confidence, they could be saving somebody's life.

      This story totally had a happy ending (the teacher in question is definitely a hero), but it also could have been prevented if one of the girls that said that he'd been having text conversations about ending his life with them had spoken up. It was more than one girl.

      And to end it on a good stuff note:

      When it happened, a number of kids in the area were told to run, on the basis that people heard the gunshots. My son did exactly what he was told. He ran. Out of the area, then off of campus, then the mile and a half to get home. I was like 'I don't think they meant you to come home' and he said 'my teacher just said run'.

      Second, the school is situated right by a shopping area which includes a Safeway, a Starbucks, and a Lowe's. With the hundreds of kids fleeing the school (there's about 1400 students) as they were, the businesses stepped up, found places in said businesses that were secure and safe for all of them, and kept them there until district officials/parents were able to pick them up. They assisted in head-counts and alerting the district as to which children were where, helping LOTS with ensuring parents knew where to go find their children. All without being directed to do so.

      The communication system the school has is great, too. About every hour as a parent of a kid there, I got a text message keeping me appraised of the situation. While my child was safe, had he not come running (heh heh heh) home, I would have really appreciated the frequency of the updates. Where the kids were, where we could find them, what was going on.

      So many things could have gone wrong today, but between the staff of the school and our local community, everybody ensured that it all worked out.

      OK. Not going to engage any more than I have. Also totally not wearing the mod hat on this, so take it or leave it, no worries on that. I hope things get better for you.

      @Ganymede

      More energy, easier to bounce around for longer. Breathing easier. I was super crabby for a couple of weeks, but that seems to have faded. I've also successfully turned the habit of 'urge to smoke' from 'go smoke' to 'go walk around the pond' (I really only get the mental cravings at work, not at all at home anymore), so that's probably helping too. I have been walking the shit out of the trail around the pond.

    • RE: Staffing Philosophy: Action vs Procedure

      I am really of the opinion that dirty laundry doesn't need to be aired in public; I also agree with Sponge that detailed negative posts about why a player is gone make people not involved uncomfortable. It really should just be as simple as:

      'X has been banned from the game for a violation of our harassment policies. Please contact staff if you have any questions/need any resolution to stories.'

      If someone's done something to deserve being banned, putting it up like that isn't going to do any harm.

      Also, @JaySherman: Kill both player A and B with fire. Get rid of them: they are BOTH major problem sorts. They are not going to be any good for your game. Even a little bit. If it's a "friendship" that's being held hostage in any fashion, it's not actually a friendship and you're being used/manipulated.

      I will probably be resubbing for this. My old pvp guildies keep popping up in the strangest places (how did they even get my new discord wtf) asking if I was gonna put together a team, sooooo yeah. Probably!

      @lotherio

      I don't think anyone here except you is calling not-mushes mushes. MU* has been a long-term abbreviation that includes everything from MUSH to MUD to Ares, because MU is 'multi-user' and * is a wildcard. Pretty sure all of the platforms being discussed are MU*s.

      Yes. Story of my life until recently, honestly. ('Your leg can't possibly be broken, you're walking on it.' a couple of x-rays later 'Oh, your leg IS broken'). So having a doctor that listens is priceless. Rare creature that she is.It's very happy making.

    • RE: Looking for a MU or Two

      @bad-at-lurking

      Sure. But that's not what they're asking. They're asking what anime means in this context, which is a very different question. No mush is animated with cartoon characters in the Japanese style: we're playing in text. If you go with the literal definition of what you're talking about...

      So, that leaves us with: okay, no games based on an anime series? No games with anime influences? No games that allow many genres of characters all mashed in together, because someone might play an anime PC?

      It's not a silly question. These are VERY RELEVANT if you want to get an answer that will be useful to you. There are games that fit all of those criteria out there, and if you mean all of them (nothing that could even remotely include something vaguely anime like), then people are asking to KNOW that. Otherwise they. can't. help. you.

      Yeaaaah, there's no fix for 'I don't wanna'. It's not a problem with a solution possible.

      @RnMissionRun your point may have been that, but then you should have said THAT, and not that you don't believe that it will make much of a difference. It will make a HUGE difference, just not for lazy people.

    • RE: A new platform?

      I'm sure there are.

      We're still using this platform though, so it's probably not the best source for this information. Google might help.

      Alternately, both AresMUSH and Evennia are 'new' codebases used for this style of RP with a great many improvements, but they are still compatible with telnet.
