@Miss-Demeanor
Yeah I missed that part. I am fine with the entirety of Ark's proposed system except for that. But then I would be just as against that system for anything physical as well, so maintain the partial stance of it would be no different doing that for something psychical as well as social.
I think any sort of code mechanical thing should emit to both sides, though I still feel there should be no functional difference between how psychical confrontation works from social, or mental confrontations like chess, or if the systems has it codified as such economic confrontations such as two business competing or one attempting a take over.

I am not sure where the only one side gets to see the roll comes from. Both sides would see the roll both sides see all rolls in every code base I have any experience with.
What Arkandel suggested was the defense side suggesting modifiers. That works both ways and fits in most systems, if we are fighting in a bar and i suggest there should be a modifier on attacks of -2 due to there being a big crowd making maneuvering difficult, you have three choices, agree, negotiate or call in staff.
In a social situation say you are trying to fast talk me in a bar and I suggest a -2 due to your character being a known business rival you are left with the exact same three choices, agree negotiate or call in staff.
Yes people can and will be dicks with this but they can and will be dicks with any sort of system no matter how it is set up, even GURPS which is robust to a fault does not cover every situation that will come up in play. In any game where choices are open there has to be some level of agreement because no pre-written book will cover everything. -

@ThatGuyThere Ask staff on TR, or even Reno 2.0 if they have the time to come mediate every social interaction where one side doesn't like what the other side is doing. Go ahead, I'll wait.
I am sure they didn't but I am also sure they likely didn't for physical as well, the fact is all games and systems for the most part only run when you have players willing to work with each other.
Taking the Gangrel example that i did not quote, now if dice have been rolled sure staff will enforce that 4 agg, but lets say before a roll gets made one side requested staff mediation, I am willing to bet more times then not the matter is dropped before before said mediation comes to a conclusion just because of the wait that would cause.
As I have stated before if I am about to enter PvP of any with someone i do not know I request staff to run the scene mechanically, at least in my personal experience literally every time the other side has either then worked out a mutually satisfactory conclusion or decided to retcon all interaction rather than wait for staff, granted this has happened I think 7 times so it might be a small sample size but I still don't see how social mechanics requiring honor system and trust differs much from physical. -

@Groth Got access to the bank accounts, didn't I?
I mean, it's all what expectations are set by the rules being put forth. If you create a ruleset that is focused on results and everyone knows that they can't dictate feelings, then yes, people might be frustrated, but they should be OK with that.
That is a lovely sentiment in theory but not one I have seen a whole lot of times in practice. People will kvetch and moan about all sorts of rules not just social. Look at most instances of telenuking for example.
Socials will get this more then physicals that is true, but just as someone who walks around and even just threatens system based psychical conflict will get a rep for being a PKer even with no actual PK happening those that would do the same with a social system will likely feel the same OOC social backlash.@Miss-Demeanor said in Social Conflict via Stats:
@Arkandel That's the honor system, and let me know when you've had a game of more than 10 people where the honor system actually worked. There's no checks and balances in your example, no way to ensure that people are actually posing according to the results of the roll.
Isn't that why you have staff available to adjudicate scenes. Normal combat works the same way though with more codified modifiers but if the two players RPing a fist fight can't agree on a mechanical issue they call in staff to sort it out, social could be done in the same way. Yes it creates more work for staff but so does making any sort of system a priority will.

RE: Tracking Alts on Dynamic IPs
I would like to second the warning about possible false positives as this has actually happened to me.
It was in the mid 90s and the friend who got me into mushing recommended a new game. I took that recommendation and made a character there. Naturally since i was going there on his recommendation I made a char to interact with his. We were both in college at the time and living in the same dorm, 5 floors apart but same building, on the same campus, and connecting on the same university supplied internet access, before long staff decided we were the same person because of the IPs, it took quite a bit of going round and round and pointing out others that were also playing there and living on campus that also played before staff finally let the matter drop. I am not sure they ever beveled us.
While the mushing population currently is a lot lower I do know there are a handful of other mushing living in the same town I do, some I am friends with some I just know of. I do not know which ISPs they all use but I would not be surprised if some of the others used Verizon like I do. So it is conceivable the situation could repeat itself. -

But my point is: physical stats get less flak because there's this tacit and implicit agreement in the hobby that you don't need to get along OOC to get into a physical bloody brawl IC, and "oh well, I killed your character, SUCK IT". And it's a shitty position to take as a hobby.
When do people ever do this, on which games?
Because I can't recall coming across it on a MU I played on, ever. Sure the world's full of bluster, but actual follow through of just offing people? It doesn't happen in my experience, and I expect on games where it was the norm I wouldn't be playing.
I could name a few, thankfully that era is mostly the past however if there is one thing this hobby specializes in is people with long memories who carry mental scars form one game to all future games.
I have to admit being one of them which is why any PvP be it social, political or psychical with someone I do not know always goes to staff mediation as the first step. -
RE: RL Anger
I mean this as an honest question, if families are that bad why deal with them?
I mean my father was not abusive or racist or horrible but he was also distant, uncaring and generally not the sort of person I would want to be around. I have not spoken or seen him in two decades. I still keep in contact with other relatives on that side of the family but not him. I understand family bonds are tight but if someone is a negative influence on your life family or not I have to wonder why anyone would keep them around. -

The trick is to become immune to guilt trips, this is hard but possible.
Of course I think I had the advantage of my large Catholic family in this regard they over used guilt so much that by the time I was 18 it has ceased to work on me. granted my mom still tries now and then but I think she has realized that trying to guilt trip me leas to me ignoring her position all together. -
RE: FATE/FUDGE RPGs?
From what i have noticed the results of rolls tend to bell curve nicely centering on the raw bonus.
So a +6 before the roll will tend strongly toward being in the +5 to + 7 range, just like a roll with a 0 bonus would tend strongly toward being in the -1 to +1 range.
For a difference as large as +1 vs +7, that is almost to the point I would not bother to roll. I do not know the actual math off hand but I would say the +1 side has under a one percent chance of winning with the standard four dice roll. the +1 side would need to get at least a +2 to even have a chance to tie and if the +7 side gets anything a -1 or better the +1 sides roll is completely irrelevant. -

@Insomnia
Popular vote only matters on an individual state basis. Think of winning each state as getting a number of points based on the population of the state. So in reality it is not one race but fifty smaller races with the most aggregate points winning.
Yes this is an over simplification but about the easiest way to get a rough idea. -

I think the problem is that being marginal playoff team reduces the chance of keeping Westbrook. He's probably not going to the Cavs, but I think he'd work with the Pelicans or the Timberwolves.
From your fingers to God's ears, at least that is what the Twolves fan in me hopes.
Point guard is the weakest spot on the roster for them.Also @Arkandel don't be hatin' on Swaggy P man. (This is also written with tounge firmly in cheek.) To be fair and mildly serious he was one of the more entertaining reasons to watch the Lakers the last couple of years, not particularly good but very entertaining.

@Arkandel
That all depends on the outlook you have, I have never been the championships are all that matter type of fan.
If I was an OKC fan I would want them to fight like hell to stay a marginal playoff team because while blowing up a team can lead to greater growth in can also lead to a decade of no playoffs wilderness.
As to faith in the front office there, I join you in have no real faith in it, but I do give it point for trying. You are right though it all depends on what Westbrook does after next season, but even if he goes Oladipo and Adams are solid starters and will keep them from being a 10 win team like the Sixers were last year. -
RE: 2016-2017 Basketball Thread
@Arkandel
I agree it is not nearly enough but it is a start and a good sign that they are not going to go full on Sixers supertank. -
RE: 2016-2017 Basketball Thread
Good news for Oklahoma City fans, reports are that they have signed Victor Oladipo and Steven Adams each to 4 year deals. True neither is Durant but it is a good sign that the franchise will remain competitive, or at least try to.

I must say that sounds neat as heck. One of the things i wish was more possible in the MUSHing side of things is the ability to get a small group together and just find random things like that.

Oh man. I hate receptions. I would totally love the chance to just go for the service and then bail. No gift? No boring speeches full of inane, inside jokes? No sitting around making small talk? I'll sign up for that every single day.But you miss the free booze and the usually good food.
The more I think about friends weddings the moments I remember are from the receptions not the ceremonies. I can think of maybe tow or three moments from ceremonies and literally dozens of stories from receptions.Switching to my RL anger, why is it so fricking hard to find marzipan in this town. I don't want it chocolate covered or anything fancy just regular block of marzipan I can make my own candies with. Every since the German restaurant and store in town closed it has been like pulling teeth trying to get a hold off this stuff.

RE: Wiki and You
Despite my lack of using them in any real way I am not anti-wiki but i see them as a appendix to the game.
This might be because the main things they get used for are pretty low importance to me.
I have no problem with wiki being used as a tool but make it a mandatory part of the game and I will move on.
I realize this might make me a dinosaur but I am fine with moving on to another hobby when that time comes. After all I stopped getting video games with the onset of DLCs and needing to be online to play a single player game.
Honestly, I would not even make a character page if the 20 minutes f slapping one together wasn't less annoying the regular comments of how I need to make one.
