      Just because a storyteller isn't around constantly doesn't mean the merit no longer has value.

      I never mentioned the value, though it is lessened in a MUSH environment after all in a TT it is usable in 100 percent of scenes, in a mush far fewer.

      For every scene that does have an ST, the merit applies quite well - and those are usually the scenes you need the merit for. You won't get a benefit at the bar scene or the coffee shop scene or the TS scene, but you generally don't need the merit there.

      You can get into a lot of trouble in non-ST scenes pretty much any PvP starts out that way, not to mention making political errors that can have pretty large repercussions and in my experience the scenes where real political work get done rarely have anything close to a ST around. Hate to break it to you but there are a hell of a lot more scenes besides random bar and TS that lack STs.

      Not sure about Dark Fate off the top of my head, but Common Sense is one that should have 0 issue and should be taken by more people, but isn't because people don't want to "waste" points.

      You do realize that as written common sense requires a storyteller present, right? That is not something that is happening in the vast majority of MUSH scenes, making it a prime example of something not written for a MUSH environment.

      Edit for @Miss-Demeanor OWoD version is just the storyteller warns you before you do something abjectly stupid. Exact wording "Storyteller should alert you as to how your potential action might violate practicality."
      No roll involved.

      I would really like a comic book game that didn't blank charsheets and didn't require you to write your entire character's app "in your own words" including powers, abilities, whatnot.

      As much as it did other things wrong in my opinion, this is one point Hero Mux got spot on. They left sheets in place so if you picked up a character the app was just four questions mostly about selecting which version you were playing and how you saw your character fitting into the game instead of having to fully re-sheet.
      If you wanted to change a characters abilities when you took them over then you had to do the full sheet app but if not you could get it done fairly easily with a lot less writing.

      Lets not forget they had him trade his one lasting relationship to the devil for his Aunt's life.
      I am not sure about Marvel as a whole but I know Joey Q( Mr. I drew really bad comics) has mentioned in interviews he does not understand why fans love Spiderman.

      I have no issues with house rules as long as they are posted clearly and easy to understand and navigate with looking for a specific item.
      I have never been in a role playing situation with out a handful of house rules, not in table top, larp, or a mush.
      To be honest I don't see rules as written as anything especially sacred those people running each actually game should modify what they see fit to produce the game they want, but I do feel those changed should be clearly posted or in the case of table tops announced before hand so players can make educated decisions both in cg and in regards on whether or not to play at a place.

      Those are just bad ideas.

      I take back every bad thing I have ever thought about you.
      I always thought the idea for the Superior Spiderman sounded like bad fan fic.

      I think this mindset may play into most of the games based on existent comic properties tending to go broad and let differing versions coexist wherever possible(can't have show Barry and comics Barry, but Barry, Wally, Jay Garrick, and so forth can all be 'the Flash' if that's how players want it) nowadays, whether multi-theme or not.

      You forgot Bart, Bart was Flash for a bit as well, and John Fox. 🙂

      To alter the topic I would really like a game that did something along the lines of what DC did when they did the Tangent Comics.
      Basically the names of the characters were the same but everything else was changed, for example Superman was a powerful psionic and Flash was a girl with light based powers, and Batman was the spirit of a knight, etc.

    • RE: +wantrp Command Suggestion

      Along the line of encouraging people to RP with others they maybe would not normally interact with, I think Arx deserves praise for their thing (I can't remember what it is called) that gives each player a list of name they get bonus XP for RPing with, while this also favors the more active players, I think it is a very good step to turning a game into a single community instead of a much of isolated sandboxes.
      Not sure how this has worked out but I know in the Arx thread (where I heard of it) it got praise.

      I might have to check them out and see.
      Also just to note Steve Englehart has been worth recognizing since before either of us were born. (Not a shot at you just wanting to give a bit of praise to a writer I have always enjoyed, especially his early seventies run on the Avenger and his creation of the Defenders at that same time.)

      @fatefan
      I don't think so, I was a big fan of Valiant's first go around so I likely would have noticed one during the mid-nineties or later.
      How is the new Valiant stuff? I have been curious about it but not quite corious enough to break my self imposed exile from buying new comics.
      Also what did you think of the Valiant Universe RPG, I grabbed it like I do most superhero games but have not had the chance to play it?

      @Monogram
      I think a good part of the reason we hear about the good things less is that we talk about them less.
      Non-MUSH example, if the average person goes to a restaurant and gets good service they tend to talk about it much less then if they get bad service.
      Also the god news stuff is far less interesting as a conversation topic. Lets say Joe and Bob have a beef. If they beef continues it continues to generate 'news' it remains present and people talk about it. Joe and Bob resolve things it gets mentioned once then forgotten like most things.
      Now I do think more things are held onto then let go, not just in this hobby but in general, but not quite to the extant chatter both here and elsewhere would lead one to believe.

    • RE: XP Tax

      I think the system could work mechanically, though socially it is gonna be a hard sell.
      There are a fair number of players that like the pretty dots on their sheets and taking them away will lead to discontent.
      Yes I know you said the dates of the taxes will be known in advance but trust me that will not help people prepare for it. Many people fail to me ready for RL income taxes and the dates for that is known well in advance. The whole reason we have withholding out of paychecks now is that when the income tax was first a thing people did not prepare despite knowing it was coming leaving the govt with one hell of a collection job, now the govt had to power to compel people to prepare after that with withholding but for those in business for themselves or who are considered independent contractors it is still an issue.
      Running a MU entails dealing with tons of drama I see this as creating more when one solution has existed and has been mentioned in this thread, which having beats be worth less of an XP as people raise in experience. this will function as a tax on the XP earned rather then spent, but it is also a "tax" that will be socially easier to implement since no one actually loses anything in the process they just have to wait longer for gains as they increase in total XP.

      Edit to add: I just thought of another possible issue with taxing the dots on a sheet, since there is a fairly decent number of starting dots given in c-gen this would create an initial tax burden for those who make character near tax time might not have time to earn enough to pay.

      Sadly the Legion continuity was pretty badly messed with by every major DC crossover starting with COIE , the Legion of Three Worlds example is from Final Crisis. Zero Hour did a complete reboot of Legion continuity.
      No idea what has been done with them since Flashpoint since that was the point I stopped buying DC, (I stopped buying Marvel shortly before that.)

      Make your own Legion that takes the cool shit from all of them?

      That's really the only way that makes sense to me. There was a kitchen-sink comic book game some years back that basically took this approach, so you could have (at least in theory) White Triangle Andromeda interacting with Levitz Rokk. I'd be tempted to go a step further and have more than one version of every character available.

      That set up already has some published backing as well given the Legion of Three Worlds mini-series, where you did have multiple versions of most characters appearing.

      I share the love of the Legion but that fan base is pretty intensely fragmented on which version is the "real" one. I know most comic fan bases are but that franchise seems to be more divided I would fear a game centered on would be hard to manage.

    • RE: Borrowing ideas — at what point does it become theft?

      @Arkandel
      I would call that an attempted game coup since the goal seems to have been less to create a new game but to have the first game with better leadership and moving to a different game was the tool used to try and accomplish that goal.

    • RE: Borrowing ideas — at what point does it become theft?

      For me I would say as long as you put your own spin on it you are on the good side.
      Take the Dream Combat thing for example, if you add it thinking hey I want this to be s much like it was on Haven as possible, that I might side eye. However if your thought process is, hey I liked this there and would like to use something along lose lines for my game but modified to better fit with he settings and systems I am using; that is perfectly fine. After all the base idea in this case, the idea or tormenting another in a dream is literally millennia old.
      For actual bits of code and text taken directly I agree completely with the general consensus of get permission and give credit.
      I also agree with Gany that it is a good thing to openly declare what you have been inspired by because it both gives proper credit and lets people know what type of game to expect.

      @Miss-Demeanor said in Sleepy boredom...:

      @thebird And this is why I'm happy to have boys. Nobody questioned when I would take them shopping for Power Rangers or athletic shorts. Nobody questions my youngest wanting to wear a bright orange tshirt with blue basketball shorts. I would hurt people if I had to shop for 'girly' things.

      You might want to change those colors though, those are Knicks colors and no one should grow into the torture of being a Knicks fan. 🙂
      (For the NBA Clueless the Knicks are professional basketball team going through a rather long period of (sometimes comically) inept management. )
