    • RE: Rosters: To PB or Not To PB?

@bananerz said in Rosters: To PB or Not To PB?:

people getting very precious about said PB (but it'll wreck immersion if we have 2!).

This gets me, how small of a world to people live in to not run into folks that look like each other, not even counting those that were related my rather my HS class has two guys that looked close enough to be brothers but were not related at all. Both in college and in a past job I have had friends that looked close enough to me (poor bastards) that people thought we were brothers though neither were related in any way. Hell on the ex co-worker one he sent me a Christmas card this last year and there was picture of him and his family inside I tossed the card but save the pic and it was laying on my living room table about a month ago, my own mother asked me who I was in the picture with and I looked at it and gave the answer and said I don't remember ever being in a picture with them though, then i realized I wasn't and it was the former co-worker.
People can look like each other sometimes very closely that shouldn't break immersion because if anything it is more believable than everyone looking distinct.

My persona favorite recasting is a rather recent one on GH, James Franco was such a genius at being evil Franco, but I don't think he could pull off borderline crazy but trying to be good Franco as well as Roger Howarth does.
the only time I ever hated a re-cast was when Michael Zaslow left Guiding Light, for me he will always be the one and only Roger Thorpe.

I think I might be the only soap opera fan on the board, through that i have gotten used to re-casting of roles. Though even in that world you get upset at some casting changed as certain actors turn roles into theirs through either time or excellence or both.

I think having the PB already picked would be by far the biggest upside to taking a roster character, of course I tend to make others pick the PB for me if possible and failing that rotate through soap opera actors most people have no clue who they are.

You page someone and they don't respond. How long do you wait before paging again to see if they disconnected/missed your pose/chose to ignore you?

Honestly I wait until the next time I see them on, unless it is dealing with a situation that is being played out at that moment there is nothing game related that can't wait til the next day.

    • RE: What isn't CGen for?

It might just be coming from the style of table top groups I have been in but I have no issues with a background I mean I usually have at least he equivalent of a page or two in my head before starting the mechanical c-gen process anyway.
Pretty much every TT I have been in required a background anyway, not often a written out on but pretty much the GM pulling you aside at some point during the c-gen session and going tell me about your character. You don't have to nail down ever detail and I don't with MUSH backgrounds either but a few paragraphs detailing the important bit oh how they got to where they are today and how they fit into the game world in broad strokes is pretty much a necessity for me.

I really like numbers 10 and 11, especially 10 as I would call that a very apt analogy for a lot of relationships I have seen and been in.

It must have happened with the new update, so fixed now, with the added bonus of making a couple other changes I didn't realize were options.:)

I'm not getting a notification circle next to my bell when someone replies to one of my posts, nor are they in the notifications list. Just upvotes and personal messages now.

Perhaps this is a new notification folded into 'when someone mentions you: <action>' in settings. Trying turning it on, but it appeared to have turned itself off. Or @Arkandel's messing with me. Odds are 50/50 either way. 😉

edit: That was it. It's possible that I turned it off for my own sanity, but that doesn't sound like me.

I have noticed that same issue, when people reply to me I am not longer being notified either, and I know I didn't chance any settings.

I think another contributing factor was that condemns were on the X per week system, which leads to the mindset (similar to other systems) that if you don't use X condemns per week you're "wasting" them, so use it or lose it right?

Yeah I can see that being a huge contributing factor. After all in most game play scenarios maximizing use of abilities is a common thing, I have not played on Arx but given what i have heard second hand about the systems maybe if condemns were brought back there should be an AP cost to them make it a high enough cost that people would be hesitant to use it unless it was something deeply important to the character.

    • RE: Comics: Superman as a character

I am not a huge Morrison fan but I partially agree, the way I tend to describe them is Superman really is Clark Kent, he is the well meaning guy from a small town who really just wants to help people, but he also wants to have his own life so he dresses up in a costume to perform his good deeds so he can go back to his (in current continuity) wife and child or (in past continuities) parents and friends and be himself.
Batman is Batman, Bruce Wayne is no more a real person than 'Matches' Malone both are identities Batman will use when they provide an advantage, in Bruce's case money and tech and political power, but willing to be discarded if need be to continue his crusade. For example during the plot where David Cain framed Bruce Wayne for murder, once Batman escaped from jail he was more than willing to leave the Bruce Wayne ID and life behind and it was the rest of the Bat-familiy that concerned itself with clearing the Wayne name and finding the real culprit while Bats was busing doing his usual Gotham crime busting.

. I've also been long tempted by a Kaiju World MU filled with giant monsters.

I would so love a Kaiju game, one thought I had for one would each player have both a human scale character and a Kaiju scaled one, you could would be able to get to play on both sides of the giant monster smashing stuff equation.

I think you are misunderstanding something and that is how the IC effects the OOC, lets say you have Count Basie a fine PC nobleman and he goofs up, it happens and the player handles it well and is fine with consequences, so all of a sudden the consequences are getting dozens of messages every time they log on telling him he sucks, while it may be IC for every person that sends one to send it, and could even be completely motivated only by IC so no real infraction being committed for staff to deal with since no OOC wrong doing is occurring, but it still becomes incredibly not fun for the player of Count Basie.
It does not matter how mature a player is being continuously hammered at that you suck will likely be detrimental to your enjoyment of the game. And anyone who sees what happened to the poor old Count will now be less likely to want to risk IC mistakes since they can see the result will not be an obstacle to get past in a story but an OOC gauntlet to try and survive.

    • RE: Experienced Tiers or How much is too much?

I don't see an issue with it if all players are granted the same access to characters with that xp, if some choose not to take it, or choose to take it and spend it to grow more slowly that is the choice they are making.
If people who prefer lower powered don't make high powered characters I see no issue with that as long as events and plots get labeled on what xp range they are being designed for. I mean a 50 Xp char will be pointless in a 750 xp plot and a 750 xp char would find a 50 xp plot trivial at best (at least from a challenge perspective) but a 50 xp char and a 750 XP char can interact and rp fine.

One theory i heard that was an interesting thought, is LeBron re-upping and going somewhere with Kawhi next year. though after the way the finals turned out I am not sure he would want to stay another year in Cleveland.

Whenever I read discussions like this I realize how different the time and place I grew up in was, it was very rural so knives were always seen more as a tool than weapon so not uncommon and there were even rifles in trucks in the parking lot during hunting season but not allowed in the building. Of course this in the late 80s early 90s well before the age of school shootings.

    • RE: The Basketball Thread

My honest thoughts before the finals were that if the Cavs put up a good fight he stays, I just can't see him going out west when if he stays in the east he has a much easier road to the finals each year. After the sweep I could see him going to Philly, since I think he will stay in the east, and Boston really doesn't have the cap space to fit him.
Besides the Rockets I don't really see him going anywhere in the West and I am not sure how well he would fit.
