Wow not even the gentelmen's sweep but the full on go home in four. You have to wonder how this impacts LeBron's thoughts on where to go next year.

RE: Managing Player Expectations
@arkandel said in Managing Player Expectations:
That shouldn't be an issue. For starters you can create any character you want, including vampires, and since it's statless and there's no CGen process you can literally hit the grid in minutes. As for searching for others wanting sexy times, I don't need to explain why that would be easier on a game where +kinks is a coded command, right?
I think one issue you are missing is the scale, I mean back when I regular checked log in numbers (like 2013 or so) Shang was right around 700 every night, now If I am looking for vampire loving (I never am since I don't care for vampire in general but that is the example in use) there is a lot of crap to sort though simply because any character can be made, I might be looking for vamp on vamp action but you have to short through a lot of comic book characters, elves, Giant penises in wheelbarrow, chick made out of ice cream etc (all those examples come from shang descs posted to the old boards) to find the other vampires that takes work.
Now the Vampire game tops out at around what 50 (that would be a fairly large one sphere WoD game) oh which nearly all would be vamps and so you just have to find the ones that are open to romantic play which given the rate at which my char was hit on by vamps (none did it excessively or creepily to their credit) on RoK is not an insignificant percentage. And by shear weight of numbers shorting through 50 would take a much shorter time than sorting through 700.
Now maybe it would be best for the person whose main concern is finding vamp love to try Shang, expecting people to go with best over easy is going to lead to disappointment in right around 90 percent (90 percent is a rough guestimation based on personal experience not a statistical analysis) of the time on line or off. -

The obvious case (which I don't want the thread to be consumed by) is sex. Some players don't go to Shang but instead to newVampireMUSH, and I'm not talking about stalkers or jerks here but just regular players who want a very large portion of their RP to be about TS, yet they don't choose to play on TS-based MU*.
I can see this one for a couple of reasons, one Shang to me (never player there) seems very disjointed on a character level not a lot of continuity between scenes, not this could be totally wrong but it is the impression i have gotten over the years especially things like that ice cream character. for me it seems like the difference between porn with a plot and the tapes that are just sex scene comps.
The second obvious reason would be if vamps are their thing, why go to Shang to sort through everything to find what you want when it is likely easier and less effort to go to the vamps game and search for others wanting sexy times there. -

The problem is that bad social RP can end up without any purpose, without any point. You never manage to find something interesting in it anywhere.
This is the exact reason i use social RP as the gate keeping device because with bad social RP the only thing at risk is the time used for it. When plot or relationship (romantic or otherwise) RP goes bad it can lead to making the character unplayable which causes a lot more issues than a pointless scene.

. But in the same way that @Thenomain misses the days where RP was less structured, I miss the days when people were more willing to RP with strangers.
I think both are tied to the same issue, as the mushing population ages they have less time to mush, so less risks are taken to try an make sure the time spent is put to good use, which while that makes perfect sense it also cuts out some of the good things as well.

You don't see a scene with Bob and Mary just randomly meeting in the park to say 'hi how's the weather', which is what a lot of BarRP/random pickup scenes are like. I don't think it's a bad thing that folks have moved away from scenes like that.
I do see the loss of them as a bad thing because while they might not further a specific story they do lead to stories. If I am playing Bob, I am not going to do any meaningful relationship RP and am unlikely to do plot RP with Mary or John or anyone until I reach a comfort level with them, either from knowing them in the past or through social (or bar) RP to see if our play styles so the lose of it I think does make it harder to integrate into new circles.
That goes hand in hand with my biggest issue with Random PRPs outside of superhero games, unless I am playing a superhero the fates of random bystanders aren't really an important thing. -

Sometimes I'm genuinely unclear ooc if something is impossible or not. I don't care so much about failing at stuff it makes sense for my character to try. That can be really interesting. But it's a waste of my time and staff's time to go down a dead end and I really and truly would be fine with an ooc clarification of 'this isn't feasible at this time and due to future plots I can't tell you exactly why.' A GM being coy with me when i think I'm asking a straightforward question makes me actively disengage. I know this isn't every player but it me.
this is how I am as well. IN a table top if I come up with an idea that won't work the GM usually says sorry it won't work and everyone moves on. Given that everything on a mush generally takes longer to resolve I definitely want that on line as well, after all the table top process is mentioning it and rolling some dice so only five minutes would we wasted at most. Online, it is open a job waits days to get a reply, reply back with a +roll unless further clarifications are needed, wait more days for the results of the roll, then try to schedule a scene to put idea/thing made/whatever into action. I have no issues with trying and failing but if it is something guaranteed not to work from the beginning I would rather be told that right away rather than wasting a week or more getting being told that.

RE: #WIDWW pt 2 - ST, Player, or staff?
@coin said in #WIDWW pt 2 - ST, Player, or staff?:
And it was the best time because I felt like my character had earned that victory.
Most MUers don't really feel that way.
I think a big reason for this is the medium, most table top games I have been in have been played to a conclusion (not always a happy one for the PCs) so in table top I am fairly confident that I will see the end to the story, and willing to place more trust in the ST as a result.
On a mush I would say most stories I have been in over the years end due to game ending, players leaving, changes in RL schedules etc rather than reaching a conclusion on screen so each on screen scene has to be worthwhile in and of itself because there is very little confidence that i will see the rest of the story. In the example @coin used that is great in table top, hell I have been in variations of it both as a player and GM but if in table top I have high confidence that if something takes 4 session to build up that i will be there on the fifth when the cool climax happens. On a MUSH there is little reason to assume that so I can totally see why players want the gratification now because later could very well never come.

RE: Interest Check - Armageddon MUX (A Unisystem Urban Horror Game)
I would find this concept very tempting, I really like the witchcraft world and the Unisystem.
the hardest part would be which of my never played Unisystem character ideas to use. -

'seedy bars',
I have seen far more in seedy bars RL than I have in strip clubs which are a lot more careful because they tend to be under more scrutiny.
Dance clubs too for that matter, not saying I want to see it on game because I definitely don't but one thing no one can say is that it is not realistic. -

Even more than that; we did not have an real understanding of genetic inheritance during the medieval period.
Maybe not in a theoretic sense but in a practical sense herdsmen have known about arranging breeding pairs to get desired traits since before writing, and have been breeding beneficial hybrids (the mule) since 3000 BC, I would think that given in the setting that magical and political power are connected to it, there would be more knowledge even if not in a formalized modern manner.

RE: Earning stuff
@faraday said in Earning stuff:
The "don't be a jerk" statement isn't trying to educate someone about what proper behavior looks like
My issue with policies like this is not that those who are actually behaving badly don't know where the like are but that instead they get used as a cudgel to hammer at anyone who expresses anything less that glowing praise at all times.
Best example i can think of is from the Reach which had a policy of "Be Excellent to Each Other." Nothing wrong with that on the face but it was definitely used (by players more so than staff) as a club to silence any who said something negative be cause "That is not being excellent to each other." So if you are going to have a policy of don't be a jerk you should also police those who want to say everything is jerkiness as much as those who are legit deserving of the label. -
RE: Let's talk about TS.
@carex said in Let's talk about TS.:
I'm not saying that the creeper deserves a trial, it isn't about what they deserve.
But the entire concept of jury trial is based on protecting the rights of the accused not on getting the public engaged. And while RL the public to varying degrees does believe in the justice system very few want to participate in it, as shown by how much people do not like jury duty. Go into any jury selection situation and poll the perspective jurors about weather or not they want to be on the jury and I would be doubtful you would find enough that wanted to to fill out the jury.
So implemented on the game you would likely have most people avoiding the issue and not voting and only those with an ax to grind one way or the other actually voting. -

. You also cannot just on the first tume do anything.
I don't understand the logic behind this statement at all, it just seems to give everyone who wants to be a creeper one free shot. I mean if there is a pattern that is useful in determining the level of punishment but there are very much fist offenses than need to have the boot dropped on them right away and I would say this was one of them.

The team had to make a choice about going along with this by bailing their future or risking the guy who just got Cleveland its first professional title in sports ever, and did.
First title if over 50 years but not ever, the Browns do have 4 NFL championships but the most recent was in 1964. And before the Browns, the Indians did win two World Series Titles the most recent of which was in 1948.
Cleveland has a very depressing sport history but they do have a few titles to point to. -
RE: Code Discussion: Ambiance Emits
I generally favor emits like that, even if they might contradict the scene at hand, I like the introduction of things that I and the other players don't control that is precisely why I like dice and will you game mechanics even in minor scenes to resolve things.
In a plot of they run counter i would disregard them but in a non-plot scene, incorporate them, so you are RPing a picnic on a sunny day, then the weather emit mentions rain, guess what that means it started raining, happens to picnics all the freaking time. Be creative adapt to the situation that is the whole point of RP anyway. -
RE: nWorld of Darkness 1E v 2E
In general I prefer 2e mechanics but I dislike the concept of the God-machine (the only thing more played out to me than magic coming from Atlantis) that I go with 1e simply to avoid it.

Yeah the first two times around i watched every minute of the games, last year I dropped to about a third of the total time played that I watched, this year my plan is to check the score with about 5 minutes left and decide if the end of the game is worth watching. -
