I would also add to the take away that it can be done but is a lot of work.
My issue is not with wanted to create the L+L game that is not a marriage simulator, but the idea that all the folks are just waiting to be shown something else and then will follow along without question.
To be this strikes me as Bane level arrogance of of course once hey see my idea they will ignore what they have previously liked.
The chance is possible but it will not be easy and if you do not have the mind set of this will be a lot of work it will not happen.

I am not saying you cannot get them involved. I think with enough work you can, but ask anyone on staff from RfK they way they ran the game was a lot of work. A labor of love for the most part but still a lot of work.
The mindset I see exhibited most in this thread is that of if we provide something else they will drop what they are doing and do what we want. To the contrary I believe that most player are playing what they want or they would not be playing, now you can mold this through game culture but there has been little talk of molding OOC culture, which RfK definitely did to get people involved and much more talk about the IC situations.Edit to Add: Also a big reason the impression of unfairness lingers on Star Crusade is that the rules constantly changed. I don't mean policies I mean the actual game systems used. Appollonius already mentioned the vote thing. the economic situation went through at least three different systems regarding how the economy worked, and the large scale battle system was overhauled when, according to the post about the change on the bboards, it did not produce the results staff wanted.
Now I have no idea weather Amber was favored or not but it would take a lot more the the word of a Staffer from the game to get me to believe either way when staff was known for and admitted to telling different people different stories. -

Thirty percent of a population is a pretty significant number(For example according to the 2010 US Census it is larger then any single minority population in the US.) And I did say that was the minimum number i would put on it. I would not argue against most to be honest but that would depend on the game. I have certainly been places where most would be accurate. Also I think you are over estimating the number of people that care about systems etc, I think most of the posters here do, but I see a lot more people on games being all like tell me what i need to roll to notice something.
I don't think the population of Mu Soapbox is really representative of the MUSH population as a whole in that regard. -

From what I have seen on the Standard WoD non-consent the norm seems to be finding a small group you fit with and doing your own thing. While it is true there are people on every game who leap to get into plots there are also those who leap to avoid them, do I think it is a majority? Honestly I am not sure but at the very least I would say it is in the ball park of 30 percent of the population, and I think that small core, whether there for relationship rp or to tell their own stories among their small group are doing what they choose not because they lack other options.

RE: Storytelling Advice
I don't run +events or public plots but I do run a lot of small ones for folks I know
To be that is the key to my storytelling, know your audience, which is the players as much as the characters. You don't need to know their real life of that sort of thing but know what they like in rp, and most importantly know what they hate. A good scene can turn bad quick by including something that a player hates to deal with. -
RE: Space Lords and Ladies
I think the toughest part of changing the nature of Lords and Ladies games would be that for the most part to population of those games has refined the play to the way they want it and most of the folks who would desire something other from the games have given up on the genre.
For example I would love to play third or later no inheritance coming ever, son of a noble and go out and have adventures. The things is the L+L games never really have much in the way of adventures so I have given up on the genre. No sense beating my head against that wall again.
The L+L game crowd has essentially three parts, smallest, those like me who want adventures, next the middle sized group who want the political/empire building game, and largest currently the marriage simulator folks.
I am not sure how you reverse the trend, though for the most part it is not really an issue since the change from marriage simulator to four ex game without graphics does nothing for me either. -
RE: Where do younger folks RP these days?
It means they are sisters that are opposites but still work together to fight crime.
Or possibly brothers but not one of each definitely not one of each. -
RE: Where do younger folks RP these days?
Best way I can think of to describe Second Life was Sims crossed with an MMO.
Note that is not a great description but the best one I got. -
RE: Where do younger folks RP these days?
I know i could never rp on forum or what have you, maybe on Storium though I am not sure on that.
To me I need the game part of it. I need mechanics and randomness, other wise is just feels too much like sitting around bullshitting not that there is anything wrong with that but also that is easily available in the flesh side of things. -

As an old man, I consider both tumblr and twitter to be blights on existence but yeah I would seriously doubt they are more crazy on average then MU* people are. Maybe crazy in different ways as each generation puts there own twists on the crazy, but not more crazier. (Yes i know what i did to grammar there it was intentional for hopefulyl humorous effect.)

We are mushers aren't we kind of used to the psychologically challenged?
Not even close, in comparison.
Wow that is a truly scary thought.

Roll20 also attracts a lot of folks.
I could never really do the online table top thing myself though. -

Sounds like an interesting setting. I definitely give props for trying something unusual.

RE: The Realms Adventurous Revival
I never understood how people could keep that many alts active. On games where I have two it is difficult to keep both involved and not running into each other six or seven sounds like madness.
