    • Interest Gauge: City of Mist Game

Just checking in to see how much interest there'd be in this concept before I devote time and resources to it, usual disclaimers apply, nothing may ever come of this, yadda yadda.

City of Mist is a new RPG based on the Powered by the Apocalypse system, which is really simple, popular, and fun.

The default setting is kinda-sorta Scion meets Changeling the Dreaming -- certain people become channels for legendary powers and figures with a built-in mystical Veil (the Mist) for mortals that hides all the supernatural shenanigans. Characters can basically be anything; the example sheets include a fox-spirit ninja, a lady with a magical shapeshifting weapon, a gadgeteer zombie, a pyrokinetic, a giant Hulk-like beast dude, while the book mentions characters as literal avatars of the gods like Thor or mystical creatures like dragons, like it's just whatever you want really.

What I'm envisioning is the 1980's "neon noir" setting briefly outlined in the book, with a restricted theme for players to draw inspiration for their characters (so it's not QUITE as insane fever-dream as some of the above seems, lel); think cult classics like Lost Boys, Highlander, or the Howling, or modern sources like Stranger Things, with sort of an amped-up Hotline Miami feel.

What I'd like is feedback on the system, suggestions on how something like this might be run, and suggestions for location and flavor. Not really looking for help yet. GO!

@surreality said in I owe a lot of people some apologies.:

@thenomain It is not about that, though.

No bullshit: it wouldn't matter who that person is/was re: 'I should not have behaved as I have behaved', because I still did it.

I wanted to go back to this for a second because this is where it got really weird for me.

Why publicly involve like 9 people and "the rest of the board at large" in what amounts to a breakdown mass reveal of all this drama generated by this one person from behind the scenes? Like why do you dedicate so much time and spectacle to that information if this thread is all about apologizing for your own behavior?

If these were my shoes (and I am genuinely grateful in this case that they aren't, you really do seem to have to deal with a lot of bullshit Surr and I am sorry for that) I would have approached these people privately and allowed whatever weird crusade this thread suddenly became to become its own thing on its own momentum, if there really was any.

@kanye-qwest said in Constructive (keyword) Criticism of Arx Systems:

So thanks for the idea of this thread, but we get goodfeedback talking to players directly and aren't really getting the kind of suggestions we'd hope for. If you have feedback, take it through the official channels in game or on github, we are abandoning this MSB-staff-interfacing to focus on what we think is important, and fun.

Back to your regularly scheduled posting.

Honestly, can I just say, seriously bravo?

One of my personal biggest peeves about the Way Things Are on Arx that I didn't feel like voicing because it was a) a bit hypocritical and b) didn't really seem like it would be a very positive conversation was how much time staff was spending on MSB and engaging here, especially with the Hogpit. It just hasn't seemed like a very healthy/beneficial thing either on a personal level or gamerunner level, because TBH Musoapbox is pretty toxic a lot of the time. That's just facts.

Nobody asked for or even maybe particularly cares about my opinion but damn, thank you for winning back a lot of personal goodwill with this move.

      Sure, I'm wrong about

      I'mma stop you right there.

That's not really your goal here. Your goal, as usual, is to make this issue about yourself -- in this particular case, "I AM THE MOST NOT-A-PEDOPHILE ON THE FORUM, FITE ME."

Nobody here is on the fence about pedophilia, dude. But your ego is denser than a dying sun no matter what the topic of conversation so, again, you're missing the point by miles and it's exhausting.

Rather than join in with the much more patient souls trying to explain it to you, I'm going to encourage and challenge you to really flounce off as you've loudly stated you will be doing now. Cool off on the subject for a few days, and then come back and actually read the actual responses you've gotten, because it's clear you've been...hell, even saying you skimmed them is giving you the benefit of the doubt.

This is a very emotionally charged area of discussion for a lot of people for very good reason, but that can and does cloud judgement and comprehension at even the best of times. You will be doing yourself a favor to try and give the previous posts another pass, rather than alienating and attacking everyone else for no reason.

      ...Do they tho

Or is it just like, another thing we do because we've done it forever?

I get Pub chans, it's fun sometimes to shout out to whoever might be listening on the entire game and join in what is usually pretty chill chatter.

But I don't get OOC rooms. They're like, the Pub chan condensed down into a very tiny pond that doesn't always have oversight and people who might be inclined to be an asshole on Pub will almost certainly be an asshole in one, in my experience.

I have literally never talked to anyone who was like "you know what I like to do? Hang out in the OOC room." They just...go because it's there, or it's where many connect screens dump you.

I'm not wholely unconvinced that this isn't a troll topic intended to manufacture outrage. In any case, this is a terribad idea.

In his defense, I don't think he's trolling. Chet's been coming here for a couple of years now trying to get something off the ground, and most of his ideas have been this weird or weirder.

Also, he did clarify on the first page that (despite the thread title) he wasn't talking about making a literal Vietnam War game, just a sci-fi setting that resembles it.

ETA: I mean to say, I don't think he's being deliberately terrible, he just seems ill.

      @Misadventure

As I said, I'm not addressing the specific person's actions, which provide context and some chance of sussing out actual motivations or attitudes.
      TL;DR
"I'm sorry X was taken that way" does not equal insincere all by itself.

...yeah man, no one is saying that.

I don't mean offense, but ironically you're the one getting hung up on a sentence, rather than looking at the context of the situation. You're getting fixated on the idea that one misplaced word means everyone will read you as insincere in a completely different setting and it genuinely bothers you that you imagine this might be the case, but c'mon man, context. Most reasonable people will examine the events around the flubbed sentence with you and let you make your case, and then everyone moves on (eventually). That's not what happened here.

Tek outed Zyrus on objectively taboo behavior, behavior that major consensus states he definitely shouldn't continue. Rather than give a rational excuse, he was just trying to deflect the attention away from his own actions and cast doubt on Tek's perception of events. Luckily, this shit is so blatant that it's clearly just a desperation move on his part, but that doesn't mean that more insidious examples of this tactic don't exist and that is what everyone is getting upset about, not just that he phrased his apology in a way that can be misinterpreted. Nobody is arguing that point.

Also, if anyone ever does show up on your superhero game wanting to play Uncle Ben, you should probably ban them on principle, because nothing good is ever going to come from keeping around a person who thinks playing Uncle Ben sounds cool and fun.

      Actually...

With the comics retcon that Peter's parents were government agents who died on a mission, it's possible that Ben Parker could have been an agent as well. Specifically, a SHIELD agent. One who helped gather evidence and smash a HYDRA cell. After Peter is orphaned, Ben retires from SHIELD to help raise his nephew. Years later, SHIELD uncovers a plot by HYDRA to get revenge on some ex-agents and replaces Ben Parker with an LMD for his protection. The LMD Ben Parker is the one that gets killed, and Ben, realizing that his family is safe from retaliation so long as HYDRA thinks he's dead, stays hidden away.

      no

"Pete, Pete it's me. They didn't kill me, Petey. I'm outta hiding and it's time to really put the screws to these HYDRA fucks, buddy. Let's get 'em, let's really-- remember what I said, Peter? With great power comes the great responsibility to fuck shit up." * Cocks shotgun*

Newer codebases removing command prefixes is literally the best thing to happen to this hobby in like 20 years.

If I had a nickel for every time I typed out a command back in the day and then slammed my head against my desk because I forgot it was @blah instead of +blah, and/or spent fifteen minutes of frustration searching "help" and then "+help" for the command I wanted but couldn't quite remember, I'd have enough nickel to melt down and recast into a giant statue of a hand extending the middle finger to the entire system.

    • RE: What is your turning point?

I think you basically nailed it (no pun intended), I'd say the same things really with the addition of clingy-stalker behavior as another turn-off, even if their writing is really good.

If we're sharing memories, I was applying at a Star Wars game once with a droid character and this player latched onto me CLEARLY to fulfill a kink. She was kind of funny about it at first but then it was like, every page mentioned "are you going to buy certain...UPGRADES 😉 😉 😉 :)" and going on and on about "polishing" me (OH YEAH ADDITIONAL TURN-OFF: talking to me in pages like I am my character), uuuuuuuuuuuuhghghghghghghghghgehuwhfguiewsnafn

Edit: Just to clarify, it's not that she had a kink and I don't mean to shame, I might have even indulged her. It's just that she was so fixated and loco about it before I had even hit the grid, like...I don't know you lady, hold your goddamn horses.
