@kitteh Well that's going to start a big flaming mess. So time for a thread shift people.
No more talk of OC vs FC here? Advertisements.
Sorry I mentioned it again.

Instead of just saying: Only nice posts. Or whatever...
Why not create a template for people who are going to post an advertisement so that all the general questions are answered from the get go? Then you can make it so it is pure advertisements, and any other threads, we can make. Honestly, trying to say: Only 'nice' or 'helpful' posts is... subjective at best.
Just as an off the cuff example:

That way most the common questions are answered off the back, the
Let me preface this with a few caveats:
That said, if a game is making major changes to system, then I don't mind a respec. That's literally the only time... Except for maybe in the case of an XP cap situation in which case any sort of character growth/change would /require/ respecs of some sort.
@Ghost It is all gone. Everything that is not in your chests goes poofs with the character.
When the season ends, they just become regular hardcore characters. After every season I have to go through tons of mail and then rearrange my chests, etc.
The wiki is a hard thing to get past on a game like this too, which is a shame, because as it's an original world the detail needs to be accessible to get into the theme and really feel a part of the world, at least for me, I have so many questions that make it hard to fit into the character I am thinking of making.
I prefer systems. Consent based is to much like cowboys and indians, or cops and robbers for me. Most of the time.
There are a few genre's where /mostly/ consent based works fine.
I just don't see Final Fantasy as one of them.
This has sidetracked a bit, but, I would rather pick a PB, or be able to change it. I was able to get into my roster on Arx a ton more once I swapped the PB to fit his written description better in my mind.
As for the multiple people using same pb (And even the same picture sometimes), it doesn't weird me out that much because I am one of those who still reads descriptions
I would play a game that had a web only interface. The problem isn't the web only interface, it's the disconnect and needing to open multiple things to play /one/ game.
If it were all web access only? Cool. Works for me.
It's when I am trying to use a telnet connection that /also/ requires a web window open that I experience the issues.
Ok, going through chargen and there is some serious issues with this system. There are 5 stats. 4 of them tie directly into combat stuff, and the last stat is 'appearance'. You get 60 points, and the average is 12. Which means if you want to be remarkable in any way, something else has to suck... or you just be bland average person with 12's in everything.
There is balance, and then there is to much rigidity.
This system is /rigid/.
@surreality I wasn't suggesting that they wanted more intolerance, sexism, or anything like that. Just was commenting on the paradoxical nature of his statements and the way things are presented. As @Tempest said, first thing she got on the game was 'Women are supposed to be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, your lady scientist will be odd' or something to the sort.
It presents a different sort of mood than what @ixokai was saying. That's where my paradoxical comment came from.
I'm /definitely/ not saying Theme shouldn't be enforced, at all, one of my favorite original themes ever was heavily based on the Roman Empire in ways (Aether, I still miss you), adhering to theme is important.
There are a lot of reasons the 60's could be interesting, the civil rights movement, for sure, the change in society away from the red scare 50's days, etc.
I'm also glad that @ixokai said the PC's aren't expected to be racist/sexist, because they are heroes, which is good. Actually makes the game more interesting to me, though that wars with other things.
@misadventure said in Respecs.:
Consider superhero games where you can buy pretty much anything.
^^^^^
This right here is the problem.
Any game, of any Genre, needs to have limits otherwise there is no point in even trying to have anything remotely resembling game balance.
The rest of the statement doesn't even matter really, how does it hurt or hinder your character if someone else is stronger?
@roz said in Alternative Formats to MU:
If someone doesn't want to tinker with a modern programming language, they're certainly not going to tinker with the mess that is MUSH code.
I have to point out that this is not entirely true. I learned MUCode for free, at a time when trying to learn Python for free was less possible. The coding boot camps and such were all several hundred dollars, and I did not /have/ several hundred dollars to learn a coding language for what was, in essence, a hobby.
If someone has a brain that is code-capable they don't need much more than the built in help and mushcode.com, at least (and I cannot stress this enough) IN MY OPINION. I learned by looking at code I knew to function and seeing what they did, when I saw a piece of code I didn't recognize? Help in a bare bones server I had up taught me what it did.
I am by no means experienced a coder as say @Thenomain or @Ashen-Shugar or @faraday or @Griatch or any of the other coders who can code rings around me, but, it is entirely possible for someone new to jump into mush code without wanting to tinker with a modern language.
Do I wish I had invested that time into Python or Ruby or something else that could make me actual money now? Maybe. But then I'd also maybe start thinking of coding as work instead of fun.
Alright this is good to know, so I should def push size if I am going for the 'Big foreign brute' type
All three of these could be doable, but I think for the Magicians and the Expanse you have to figure out what you're going to do with the book/show characters. Either get rid of them entirely, at which point how do you feel the game would work without them, or do you allow them as FC's or NPC's only?
Personally, I would love to see an Original Sci-Fi written by you, and that intrigues me more than the other two.
@bobotron @Thenomain is talking about Grout the Malkavian Primogen who you have to go 'rescue' who was a psychiatrist before his embrace, the recordings he leaves behind, and his mansion itself, are awesome.
@lotherio I honestly think the barrier to entry, for this day and age, is that it's not point and click. I know in this country at least, technology is making people less intelligent, not more intelligent, if they're not spoon fed with a few clicks then they can't be bothered. I've even seen this when it comes to some gamers, where console is better for them because all they have to learn is the controller, there's no real customization, or changing response rates of the mouse, mapping macro's or key strokes, etc.
Facebook, Instagram, etc, these all provide simple point and click interfaces, same with messengers, and reddit, and everything else.
For those who /wouldn't/ find a telnet client such as potato, or whatever, a barrier to entry it's probably just lack of exposure.
In the early 90's when MU*'s were exploding, there was a wild west feel of the internet, you never knew what you could find, people were explorer's... now, everything is just handed to them and the explorer is a rare thing.
@auspice As much as I like Eclipse Phase, I just don't think it translates very friendly to a MU. The concept of /losing/ memories, possibly long stretches of memories, does not make for a good MU time, cuz, how do you track when people last updated their persona, and what about forks, and the IC/OOC separation would be...
I love Eclipse Phase, but, on a MU* scale?
I say do the Expanse if you are feeling most passionate about it, getting rid of the 'FC's' is the right play imho.
@lotherio It's kind of a catch 22, if we code it using different commands, then people will complain about it being new syntax and not what they're used to. If we don't, then we are not being welcoming to new players
