Isn't this a problem? Whenever I log into somewhere and see a WHO list populated by people who've been idle for hours, days, maybe even weeks, I really do start to wonder why they're even online. To me, when I log in, I log in with a purpose: I want to RP very soon.

Couldn't this sort of breed a culture where the idea isn't logging in to play so much as it is just logging in out of habit?

It could. But, consider this. A MU* is also a community. Don't you want the sort of culture, too, where it feels like a community? That even if you can't /RP/, you can still connect and chat with your friends? I have friends that I chat on-and-off with all day on Slack or Hangouts or anything else. If I am on a MU*, I want to at least be able to shoot the shit with people, even if I can't RP with them right that second.

    • RE: Eliminating social stats

I think, if you are only selling physical stats and skills, you are giving a big, big advantage to players who are just good roleplayers. (And I say this as one of those good roleplayers, imho.) They already have that advantage. They make friends faster, better. They get into more plots and involved in more things. If they now don't have to buy their social skills and just play how good they are, then now you give them the opportunity of being powerful combat beasts and social masters at the same time, because where else would you put your XP?

I think you'd lose a lot of the archetypal characters you are wanting because yeah, you could still /play/ Littlefinger if you are good enough. But now you can play Littlefinger without having to back it up with stats, and also make Littlefinger a master magician or knight or etc.

I can't think of a better endorsement than that, even if @Meg didn't mean it that way.

'Good' roleplayer is subjective in this circumstance and I should have clarified. Good being, I am charming and I can write the pretty words. Good being, people tend to like me OOCly. Good being that I have no social issues that might prevent me from realizing how to play people ICly.

Good does not include people that might be awesome people that are struggling to find hooks. Good does not include people that add to the game, even if not everyone likes their pose style. Etc etc.

Like always, the truth probably lies somewhere in between. @Warma-Sheen may be overly critical and the complaint is silly, but now might be a good time for @Mercutio to take a hard look at power balances in spheres and transparency with staff, too. Maybe there's nothing to look at! But hey, never hurts to do it.

@greenflashlight said in Reporting Roadblocks: Denial, Fear, Shame, Guilt, Embarrassment, etc.:

I just think when the conversation shifts from "how can a game make reporting more likely" to "staff needs to take X action no matter what," we need to acknowledge that we're no long talking about nor prioritizing the same things.

Eh, no. It's not exactly different priorities and saying that it is is taking away, I think, the fact that @Kanye-Qwest is referring to. In that, if someone is doing something Not Ok to you, then they are probably doing the same thing to multiple people.

I know for a fact that the person that I reported was also doing the same shitty things to a handful of other female players, because they told me, before and later, after the fact.

And honestly, if you don't want anything to happen to the person from your reporting, then you still aren't /reporting/ the behavior. The conversation is still 'how can a game make reporting more likely'. Your conversation is a different one. Your conversation is 'how can I be a supportive friend and just listen to someone's shitty experience', which doesn't require it being staff or not.

I think you guys are really twisting @Sunny's post and @Sunny's words for the purpose of your own narrative, and I had to comment to say so.

The whole focus of her original post in the thread was on the idea of the conspiracy and the staffers on that game. Not on moderation here.

      this.

also it definitely seems that one of the staffers has a fetish for calling women whores. despite you know, that not being in their theme from my brief glance over the game? gender equality; women don't get shamed for sexual proclivity if men don't?

    • RE: Constructive (keyword) Criticism of Arx Systems

@wizz eh, I mean, a lot of people engage in MSB and the Hogpit because they enjoy it. If staff enjoys it, then cool. If they don't, then also cool. I'm not gonna judge them either way about it.

i am not just saying this because i feel slightly defensive of how much i enjoy randomly shitposting and trying to be funny on these boards. (i started this whole thread because i think i am more funny than i am.)

'it didn't happen on the game' is the worst excuse ever not to do your job as a staffer.

doubly so if you are running an official discord for your game.

@Tez and I are so far thinking of hashing out a ranch nearby. Basically Harvest Moon, but in this game. We're both gonna be city slickers out of our element, tho, and we may or may not have room for farmhands depending on who wants to and if the people who have been offered already want to.

      @Ghost

It kind of grates on me, this type of argument. It's the same thing that's used in multitude of ways of, well we're not doing anything about /this/ thing, so should we be doing something about this other thing?

We shouldn't take refugees into our country until all of our vets have homes. Sexism is a lot worse in other countries and we're not doing anything about /that/. etc etc.

That's all I want to say.

I'll still love you until the next page though, @Ghost.

    • RE: Ideal Scene Length?

@arkandel said in Ideal Scene Length?:

But every time you log in I unload a shitload of stuff that I've been doing, PrPs I took part in, NPCs my character encountered so that building a foundation is genuinely complicated. Every scene can feel like it's catching up to something instead of building up toward something.

If every time I RP with you, you are just dumping a lot of things that you are doing into the scene. Well, I am going to quickly stop RPing with you, because that sounds boring. There's some amount of 'catching up' that should be done in a scene, for sure. People share their lives. But you don't sit down with a friend or acquaintance and just start listing everything that has happened to you in the last two weeks when you meet up with them. It's an ebb and flow. I might go 'hey, did you know I started going to the gym? Yeah, I'm really enjoying the rowing machine. I am thinking about actually getting into kayaking.' and then my friend might be like, 'Shit, I love kayaking! I own my own. Do you wanna make a plan to go out on the river with me next week?'

Etc etc. You get the picture. So I get where you are coming from, but I also just-- have never had that problem. #MoreMoneyNoProblems
