    • RE: Dust to Dust (Formerly the nWoD grenade thread)

      Alright, lovely people. I am going to do this. I'm not going to start on it right this instant; I need to finish getting back up on my feet so that I don't randomly turn into a lunatic on people before settling down again, but the last of that was dealt with today and should be worked out all the way soon (just some silly little medical stuff).

      What I need from folks is a PM here / an email to jmotteler (gasp) at comcast (eyeroll, they're what we have) dot net. I need the best way to contact you (an e-mail would be great, so I can send out a mass message, never fear, I know how to use bcc!), and what particular contributions are being offered. @Surreality, I'll definitely take you up on the building help, and @Thenomain once I have a site set up if you could just put in what you have for the chargen system that would be phenomenally appreciated. @EmmahSue, if once I get the ball rolling on this you could do some brainstorming sessions with me for metaplot/history, I need your brainz. @VulgarKitten, if you think you can work with me (I have no concerns about working with you), I'd be happy to have you on board. I am certain that I can find things I need help with.

      I do not actually need any coding help that I am aware of at this point; if I do need it, I'll let folks know. I can't quite tell who was offering concrete help otherwise and who was just jumping around, otherwise.

      What I am going to need are Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). I am very good with 1.0; TR switching to 1.5 broke my brain and I ran away screaming. So someone really is going to need to help me get out through the gate. I get the setting/fluff/etc nooooo problem, but I have to be taught the specifics of how the rules work, even if it's an example combat. Beyond that, I have very little investment in any sphere but mortal/+/immortal; I'm going to need SMEs for all of the Big Splats, which I will be following in Eldrich's shoes on opening as they come out (though I am going to want to bring forward support for Geist if it's not on the horizon, because I love the sphere so much).

      Mage is going to be a significant issue/sticking point for me, and I am REALLY going to need a SME there in particular if I want to think of including them.

      As far as flakes go, I love them. It's fine. I'm over the break staff up by sphere classic model of staffing. I think it does more harm than good, and ultimately results in people who are great at one thing having to also do things they're bad at because it's part of their job. Some of my favorite people (you know who you are, not naming names this time) completely flake out fairly regularly, and I think a lot of it has to do with people being responsible for more than they're able to take on. Sphere wiz is like, the shittiest job ever. Screw that.

      With a non-sphere staffing model, it compensates for people wandering off and back fairly well, I think. We'll have SMEs, but that will be reserved for things that actually NEED them; otherwise we'll share the workload. I honestly think that with a good team, that will make the world easier.

      I am planning on using some of the models I've developed for Smoke and Mirrors: A Victoriana Game (essentially the goal is to automate everything that does not require judgment, and remove as many barriers to play as possible -- a review system after the fact, rather than an approval system, for example).

      I assumed Sunny's "I love when Garnet sings" was more general show love, versus specific recent episode.

      The episode with...uhm. Explaining what Garnet is. When she is fighting the other Crystal Gem. That one is my favorite, that has Ruby and Sapphire in it. The song is great. But she actually sings a lot. Pearl sings less. Garnet is always hilarious.

      ...I am nerding out about Steven Universe.

      Things I love? You guys. =D

      ETA: @Sammi -- that episode. Yes. That one. There've been a few others. I actually DVR the show. -.-

      There's a huge gap between participating in the community and looking down your nose at it. If you're not attempting to do the latter, you should probably check your tone. As for your bit of irony...well. Someone else can point out the really, really, really funny part there.

      I guess I missed the part of the discussion where asking about a historical example equated to limiting the conversation only to historical examples and "moving goalposts"? But thanks so much for clearing that up for me.

      He was given an example; he provided how he'd deal with it. He acknowledged that it didn't apply to historical examples. That's the problem going on, here. The question at hand includes X, it is not limited to X. His answer is a reasonable one for the example in most cases. Telling him his answer is incorrect because it does not apply to X is moving the goal post, as the original question included but was not limited to X. If the only solution worth discussing is one that applies to every single aspect of every single possible conflict, then there's no discussion to have at all, because one size does not fit all.

      Nope, not staffer or owner. Just a very enthusiastic player that may or may not have had something to do with the sudden spike in numbers on the game.

      Here's the deal.

      I work somewhere where folks have to deal RL with racism and the resultant discrimination on a constant, all the time basis. It impacts everything from buying homes to owning businesses. It is terrible and heartbreaking on a daily, consistent basis. I don't want to deal with this theme in my pretendy fun time. I deal with it as a 'theme' in my professional and personal life already. I don't get to turn it off. I don't get to walk away from it.

      It's not fun. It's not enjoyable to explore. It's not enlightening, either.

      I don't object in any way to, for an example, someone including this theme as part of their Wild West game. I wouldn't play it, because it's on the tin that this sort of thing is very likely to be included (cos realism is more important than somebody's delicate feefees, yes, I have accepted this).

      Now, if it was a Wild Wild West movie game (see: Will Smith), I would not expect there to be a problem with wanting to opt-out of the racism stuff. Cos that's not the point of it (we have giant spider robots, ffs, we are not going for historical accuracy).

      @VulgarKitten

      Come play. You will love it. Like. It would be impossible for you to not, with what I know about your interests. Ash and Skaldia are hands down the best staff team I've ever encountered. I'd rank Skaldia up there on a level with @EmmahSue in terms of ethics and brains and stuff. Ash is just freaking all around amazing. It makes it a really safe place to play. I've seen one instance of flip-out drama and it got dealt with on the spot. It was a miracle.

      Anyway:

      The L'Agnace page is a mess, because it's my work-in-progress for how I'm going to be redoing all the province pages. I'm experimenting / fussing with my own first.

    • RE: System dealbreakers

      Any system that requires subjective interpretation on a consistent basis throughout it for a non-consent game.

      Any mechanic that involves more than a single modifier to rolls.

      Any mechanic so complex that most folks still have to have the books after a month of play because god we have to look up how it works every single damn time.

      I had a raccoon come INTO MY APARTMENT while I was home, once. Opened the sliding screen door, walk to the fridge, open the fridge, and start eating eggs. I heard something and went and looked and the thing CHARGED ME.

      It was really cute tho.

      @Ganymede

      I will! Thank you for the recommendation. There will be a gathering of resources available and the acceptance of assistance from wherever it wants to come from. I just need another week or two for a few things to stable out for me in the offline world, then I'll get a site up and we'll go from there. I've had LOTS of volunteers for help, so I don't think we'll have any problem at all getting things off of the ground and moving forward.

      I am going to be playing TinyDictator, but there are some things that I'm going to want to bat around with you once I get the site up, see what you think about them before full pursuit of the various bits. I am being deliberately vague because none of the ideas are coherently enough collected and discussed to churn them through the grinder here.

      Why on earth is 'because I have friends who speak Spanish' NOT a good enough reason to learn it?!?! Why do I REALLY want to learn, she asks.

    • RE: The Death Of Telnet: Is It Time To Face The Music?

      I want to point out that honest to god, we don't want the flood gates to open from these other RP communities. If we tip over to 'too accessible' (that sounds terrible, and I don't mean it like that) we'll have to readdress a lot more than the technology involved. Our games are all structured, roughly, the same way. You need a staffer for every 10-50 players, depending on how your game is set up, right?

      What happens if ONE of these sites that has 10k people or more decides that what we're doing actually looks super fun and becomes a trend? What does that population do to our hobby and how we have things structured? Aside from the technical aspects of it, I reaaaaaaaaaaaally think this particular angle is a discussion we should be having alongside, because we're gonna need solutions if we DO pick up a wider appeal through all of these miracles.

      Like, I am quite sure this is going to happen. You guys are smart people. Omg. The amazing things that are being done with our technology and what we have at our fingertips and the utterly just AMAZING AMAZING THINGS @faraday and @Griatch and @rook and @Ashen-Shugar and @ixokai and @Thenomain and @surreality and @Sparks and all of the rest of you guys (I am sorry, I know I have forgotten a few of the heavy hitters, I am still on my first cup of coffee) are doing...we've got solutions in sight. This problem is being addressed, it's making progress, and where we are NOW from where we were even 2 years ago is fucking INCREDIBLE. Ares and Evennia and the magic that Rhost does, the tools I have available to me as a game designer that I did not have the last time I wanted to make a game...fuck, you guys are making SIGNIFICANT progress, especially in the last 10 years or so. We're gonna get this.

      What're we going to do when it does explode? I think if that topic doesn't get addressed alongside, we could actually explode ourselves out of existence the other way. ^^

      @therealfake

      Just make the game you want to make. Do what interests you. Don't base your decision on what anyone here says, how much interest is HERE, etc. -- this is a relatively small slice of the population. I think it's way more important to appeal to yourself than it is to appeal to us, and as @Kay says, enthusiasm of staff is a key factor in success.

    • RE: Amber Game

      If you guys figure out a system that works for Amber, keep me in the loop with the modifications made with it to make it work. I have an Amber OTT I have on hold currently because lots and lots of reasons, but one of the major problems I have with picking it back up is finding a system that isn't ridiculously awful that my players won't stab me for. Amber Diceless seems awesome as long as everyone is on the same page, but at a certain point things break down.Partial powers does NOT help. I hate conjuration and sorcery with a passion, because as ST I have to regularly say no, with a reasoning of 'because it'll cause a problem' and then there's that whole fight and I end up wanting to stab people in the face and....yeah.

      Keep me updated. 😉
