5th edition is probably the best edition of D+D in my opinion, never been a huge D+D fan outside of Forgotten Realms though.

RE: The Death Of Telnet: Is It Time To Face The Music?
@three-eyed-crow
I have never tried to mush from a keyboard but just the simple act of texting makes me appreciate my full keyboard so much. I couldn't imagine trying to write a full paragraph on a phone.
OOC chatting I could see doing but not full RP. -

Music, for me, has to hit more than just 'this has really good lyrics' (the only person who can do that for me is Bob Dylan; the man is a lyrical genius, but his voice...). I have a slight hearing issue that makes actually parsing lyrics hard, so it's all about the beat and cadence. U2 is absolute garbage for that. It's flat.
In this thread we learn that me and Auspice should never ever listen to music togerher since lyrics are 90 percent of what gets me to like a song.

RE: Um...What?
@auspice
My all time favorite wrong number situation was when I was in college, this was the days of the answering machine.
Me and my roommate had our names in the greeting and sounded like two dumb college kids cause we were just that. This guy kept leaving messages for his boss about having to miss work on our machine always while we were in class and he never left a number, so we could call him back and let him know he got the wrong one. (Caller ID cost extra at the time and we were broke as well as dumb college kids.) Over the course of about two months he left a few more increasingly upset messages not realized why his boss was getting angry about him not calling in when he is leaving the messages. Finally we got one with the dude in tears after getting fired for missing work without calling in and wanting to know when he called in every time.
To this day I still feel bad for the guy since it was a total miscommunication that got him fired.
Sadly he never left anything but his name Chris and only called his boss by his first name (I think it was john but can't say for certain anymore) never a number or a business name so we could try and clear it up. -
RE: The Death Of Telnet: Is It Time To Face The Music?
@faraday
I make board post so rarely looking up how to is not a burden. Any command I use often is not hard to memorize.
What I don't want is giving some random other player the ability to shit out images on to my screen. I much prefer them getting to put a link I am politely not click on. If the default is to see them and the onus to figure out how not to is on me that is not a situation I would care to sign up for. -
RE: The Death Of Telnet: Is It Time To Face The Music?
I think a lot of the rancor by myself and others is some of the we must move forward stuff involved a direct repudiation of what we like about the hobby. For example in Faraday's list of wants:
@faraday said in The Death Of Telnet: Is It Time To Face The Music?:
- A GUI, so I don't have to remember/type obscure command-line syntaxes just to do everyday stuff.
- Graphics embedded in descs and character profiles.
While that might draw people for me it would send me running, the last thing I want in my RP is a bunch of images, and in general dislike Graphical UIs. So if my choices are the hobby dying or evolving into something I do not what to play exactly what reason would I have to prefer either side?

- Should we even jump ships, or accept our fall into extreme RP obscurity?
This is pretty much my vote. I prefer text based and real time to the other options. I have no desire to have voice RP with strangers nor to give other people the ability to spam a scene with pictures or memes, I figure I will ride the ship down til I can't find a game I like with double digit players.
When that happens I will likely just start up a table top in the middle of the week, since I know a fair number of player around me who want to table top but don't want to give up a weekend day. -
RE: Good or New Movies Review
@zombiegenesis
I don't think it is a conspiracy but it is a movie you have to know critics will hate.
Most critics tend to me more into movies for the art side rather than entertainment side, so their reviews will show that preference.
Hell that is why I make the distinction between good and what I like in movies. A movie can be very very good and I might not like it. (Citizen Kane for example, I will freely admit one of the best movies ever but I wold cut someone if they tried to make me watch it again.) Just like there are very bad movies that I love. (Toxic Avenger for example.)
I have not viewed it yet though I plan to after the holidays, but from what i have heard from both reviewers and normal folks I can safely say it most likely will not be particularly good but I will almost definitely like it. -

But basic mechanics? If someone joined a DnD game and didn't have at least a basic grasp of how it works, people would be pissed. Expert level mastery not needed, but a goodly many folks at least know the general gist, even if they have to look stuff up occasionally. That is the expectation.
Off Topic Rant but here goes, for gods sake look up your shit before it is your turn if you are a player. Combat both in Table top and in mush is not all that fast moving, if you have a power, skill, spell, or whatever, and wonder if it can be useful, look at it while during one of the folks going before you. Yes sometimes the situation can change and cause a delay that is understandable but abut half the time wasted in combat would be fixed by people getting prepared to take their turn a little in advance.

@surreality
I agree with everything you just said and I personally like to learn new systems, but I hear a lot of people shoehorning WoD the system into things because "it is the system people know"
I personally always prefer a system focused on what theme and tone you want rather than trying to retrofit something to be just good enough to work that that view is far from universal. -
RE: World of Darkness -- Alternative Settings
The problem with not WoD is then you have to either go system less or have to deal with trying to teach people a lot of whom don't want to learn a system a new system.

The second question is easy to answer. The answer is Because Ket.

RE: Good or New Movies Review
Have not watched it yet but that was my general impression from the trailer, does not look like a particularly good move but looks enjoyable and fun which works just as well in my opinion.
After all some of my favorite movies are not good. (Glance at his DVD player in which Big Trouble in Little China currently resides.) -
RE: The Football Thread
The best thing about the play is that no one covers the RB out of the backfield instead two players covered the TE. The assignments got messed up and McCaffrey would have scored with either route.

RE: The Football Thread
Since the thread as been necroed, the Vikes clinched the NFC North today.
<and there is much rejoicing>

@auspice IKR? 150 minutes is no joke. Like, at least have an intermission or something.
Have not seen Last Jedi, but god dammit yes intermissions need to be brought back to movies that are over two hours let me stretch my legs and grab another soda with out missing anything you bastards.
Hell the theatre I go to have refills of soda but WTF is the point of that if I can't get a refill without missing the movie. -

@meg said in Alternative Formats to MU:
@auspice Why would this need to eliminate phone MU? Or using not a mouse?
Actually, with AngularJS, I can implement so much more in terms of touch-responsive UI. I could, hell, integrate a swipe left, swipe right, swipe up, swipe down motion to move your character through the grid. How fucking awesome would that be?
Touch screens are the devil, the single reason I do not own a smart phone.

@rook I think you kind of have to accept that UI is important to every other person out there, and that your feeling that it's not important is unique to you as an internet user.
Not every quite probably most but not every. Since my view is pretty much the same UI doesn't really matter to me either, as long as there is a basic help system in place.
Of course I say this as someone who has yet to see a UI that wasn't a pain in the ass until I learned it except maybe Excel. -

It's a people problem. You have a people problem where people aren't using basic etiquette, and then blaming it on something else entirely in this thread.
You have a much higher faith in humanity than i do, basic etiquette is not a common thing, so yes I am against shifting to a technology that makes it's lack more glaring.
Right now some number between 0 and 100 percent are slow due futzing around on the web while rping, I think if the game was web based that number would rise. If it rises because people are rude or because the technology changes makes no difference to me, I care about it rising.
I don't see how this would be different than cell phones in daily life, I was in a line yesterday, multiple people were dicking around on their phones. No biggie. Two people causes the line ot me slower because of this because they didn't move promptly when it was their turn. Yes those folks were rude but the technology allowed their rudeness to have an effect.And if it was 1948, those same two people would have been slow because they were reading a newspaper.
Again. This is a people problem.
Funny I don't think newspapers allowed you to text back and forth with people which is what both were doing.
I will agree they would likely have been inconsiderate at any time but my point is that greater technology for the most part just allowed a greater impact for the inconsideration. -
