Can you imagine The Godfather without the hard language?

Totally off topic but if you ever get the chance watch the basic cable or broadcast edit for Goodfellas ... serious the most bizarre experience I have ever had.

At that level of desired control it seems like they would be better suited to writing a script or novel. My its very nature a MU will have multiple folks each with a slightly different idea of what the setting and genre are. Ideally you have a staff that is firm enough to provide coherency while also giving players enough freedom to stretch creatively. that place sounds limited to the extent that you would be expected to follow a script without the courtesy of being given one.

Wow that completely boggles my mind, the whole group of teens having pizza is pretty much a staple of a lot of horror.
Hell I used to watch every slasher movie i could get my hands on and that was a required scene almost. You have the set up pizza party type things that intro the characters and has some jump scares, then you roll out the plot a bit. then there is the second occasion where the group gets together again and then the horror part starts.
I have heard many things in my time but staff complaining about the standard story progression of the genre is a new one.

the first example I used with the club was the exact same thing that you said doesn't happen. yzou said. "no one has ever walked into a punk club and, over time, attracted more of their friends and turned the punk club into a hiphop club" That is almost exactly what happened in my example except substitute dance music for hip hop.
Another true real world example from where i live now. There was a gay bar my friend used to DJ at. It was the most popular one in town. A lot of straight women would go because it was a nice place to drink and dance and not worry about being hit on. Influx of woman lead to an influx of straight men seeking straight woman, which lead ot most of the original community leaving and starting opening a new place where my friend ending working as a DJ instead. The original gay club is still the main meat market in town.
I am not saying these things are good by any means but they are not unique to on-line. Something gets formed for reason. Succeeds at forming a solid core of people that gets it noticed to a wider audience, the parts of the wider audience that like thing but aren't devoted to it move in causing popularity surge. Popularity surge causes more numbers gains because some folks will swarm to the popular. Original Core loses power or is squeezed out entirely.
This is not unique to the internet this is pretty much humanity.

    • RE: Good or New Movies Review

I think I have turned the corner on superhero films, now they have become just another genre to me, no different then Rom coms, or horror. I will still go see some of them, since it is a genre I like, but I no longer get excited about them.
Not exactly sure why, I mean I was planning for weeks waiting in like and going opening day excited for Thor and Thor 2, for Ragnarok I was I defiantly want to see it but waited until the second Tuesday it was out when the crowd would be smaller and I could get $5 tickets like I would for any other movie.
Not sure if it has just reached the saturation point where I no longer see them as special or what it is.

Edit to add: I may have to wear a mask when I go to the comic shop again, just saw a commercial for pitch perfect 3 and sadly looking forward to that more than any things else in the pipeline. (To be fair a not small part of that is that i know it will be one of my PCs favorite movie of the year.)

@gilette said in Reasons why you quit a game...:

To use your analogy, no one has ever walked into a punk club and, over time, attracted more of their friends and turned the punk club into a hiphop club by inches and degrees simply because the punk club is the most popular one around.

Actually that has happened repeatedly in my personal experience, for example there was this bar in my college town called the Regency, it was a punk place but since it was mainly the home to live music it was also one of the few venues that would let in under 21 with the standard hand x, down the block there was a club that played dance music (never went there do not remember the name) and had a similar policy. Club down the block got into legal trouble due to serving minors and was shut down. Once that happened throngs of dance music people started coming to the regency and eventually pushed out the punk folks. In the real world this sorts of things happen all of the time. Hell gentrification is another example of the exact same thing, member of outside culture sees place it likes, moves in, then a few more to etc.
The conflicts get resolved in different manners but at a base they are the same. OFr example in on line there would not be fist fights as was the case of the club switch nor rising cost of living forcing old resident out in the case of gentrification.

    • RE: Regarding administration on MSB

I still don't this this as a big deal. I am likely the first to rant about unnecessary moderation.
I don't see this as being a case of it.
Would I have made the post as a mod? Not without someone posting something to the effect of lets do X but given that WORA the board quite a few of us long timers migrated from did have these things planed there and then executed, and such things have been mentioned hopefully jokingly in other threads, I also don't see it as a grand controversy that it was addressed as a Don't Do This post either.

    • RE: Period Piece Face vs Modern Face

I will mention the easiest answer.
Sean Bean - period face all the way, also likely means the character will die as well. The Sharpe's series being the notable exception to that rule.

    • RE: Regarding administration on MSB

For me the line on what is not cool is pretty distinct, calling a game, its staff, its players, or its code base any nasty thing under the sun is one thing, saying Lets do X regardless of how minor X may be is beyond the pale.
I thought it was asinine (even if reading the post was amusing) when the WORA of old would do the prairie MU* invasions, and I feel is is just as bad the thankfully few times similar comments have popped up here.

    • RE: Regarding administration on MSB

Ok I have not read the stranger than fiction thread yet, though I will soon but how is a Mod tell people not to plot against a game even a debatable thing?
Even me who favors a total shit flinging environment to moderation thinks that is the sort of thing that should be stopped. I am all for this place being a spot to discuss games however the discussion goes but using it as a base to actually attack a game rather than just talk bad about it is definitely beyond the pale and should not be done.

After reading the article about otters and possums, I am still trying to figure out the point.
It basically points out that as a group grows it tends to have ideological drift? If so why do we need the whole otter possum thing, or pretending like this is news, it is seen literally everywhere.
Hell you can see this just by looking at Punk music expanding in the early-mid 80 and the conflicts there about what truly counted as punk and that was before 90 percent of the population knew what the internet was. Or hell the change in Christianity as it moved from mystery cult to large religion which was well before the internet.
Sorry for the off topic rant but it annoys me to no end when people take something that has happened since humanity and decides it is something new because it happened on-line.

No offense to business majors on the whole, but there's a point where the economics of running a business should take a back seat to the stated goal of running that business.

While I agree with this sentiment 100% and was partially a business major. (I had a double major, double minor, half of each set was business related) often times the real goal for the people running the business is the economic part.

I know my take on this will piss people off but what the hell.
From my point of view it is the job of every customer to get the lowest price possible for whatever they are wanting, it is the job of the supplier to get the highest price possible this is what makes a market economy. This is try whether are talking about art, a car, food or labor.
I will never fault someone for trying to get a lower price on a thing, just as I do not fault the producer for says, well for that price I will keep said thing instead of selling.

@lithium said in Questionably viable character types and tropes (tangent from staff ethics convo):

The character that isn't even remotely human, and thus cannot be interacted with by normal human means to any meaningful extent.

      It's like... why?

I never minded this one, at least in the right settings, like the example of a Superhero game, if a significant number of the PCs are non-human or more than normal human and can interact with the character I don't see it as all that bad, after all while a character might not interact with the mass of NPCs but if most of the rp is about comic book style action then those tend to me more set dressing than anything else.
Best example I can think of off the top of my head is the early 90s Vision after they removed his emotional capacity, in RP terms it would be pointless for him to RP with a civilian but as the comics should there would be plenty of opportunities to have scenes with teammates and of course the plot stuff.

These situations are where I learn that I am really not a nice person. Last time I dealt with a similar situation I found out how much I could get away with without violating noise laws and took full advantage. Three days later the neighbor was suddenly reasonable.

Could be fun! Especially if historical accuracy standards aren't very highly upheld. 🙂 Did the 20s have radio? Talking pictures? I don't remember!

Radio yes, talking pictures or television no, silent movies yes. Quick long range communication was the telegraph.

@arkandel said in Staff and ethics:

@surreality So for example what's the correct generic approach to a scenario like this:

      • There is an allegation that Bob is harassing Jane. Staff investigates.
      1. Bob is found GUILTY and bans him. Does Staff announce that he's banned? Do they explain why? To what degree? To whom - is it only to those involved or to the public?

I would say staff should definitely announce the ban, for no other reason than to let people know Bob will not be around. Assuming Bob was not an asshole the entirety of his time there are likely other PCs unconnected to the complaint who might be in plots with Bob, politically aligned with Bob etc and the announcement lets them know to move on with RP.
Personally I would also like to hear a reason but that is secondary and optional but I think knowing the person is for true gone so weeks don't pass waiting for him to run the next scene of a plot is essential.

    • RE: How should IC discrimination be handled?

I think the biggest issue to me comes down to is it fun for everyone involved. After all that is the goal of the game. So as a player i am not really comfortable RPing a character who is sexist or racist because I know there are other players who have to deal with those issues every day.
It feels different to me if I am playing a character that hates Mutants in a Marvel setting, or dislikes Joe because he is a Gangrel, there might not be much IC difference but on an OOC level I know none of the players are mutants or Gangrel.
