@alzie said in Regarding administration on MSB:

So you need rules to tell you how to act like well adjusted human beings? We have a word for that.

The difference in what constitutes "Well adjusted" behavior is not the same at all across the country let alone the world. Where I live depending on the inflection being called a "son of a bitch" is either a high compliment or a invitation to throw fists, where I grew up it was an insult though not a severe one.
Since moderation has become a thing it is very much on the moderators to provide the cultural norms much like it is on staff to provide them for a game.

    • RE: Regarding administration on MSB

I agree with @wizz the most important parts of any rules system are clear guideline and consistent enforcement.
I know @Arkandel said elsewhere we shouldn't need rules not the be asses (paraphrasing) but the simple fact that moderation was desired kind of shows that to not really be the case.
Clear guidelines also help by lessening the need for moderation as those who find the guidelines too restrictive can leave, for example me and the advertising board.

    • RE: How do you construct your characters?

For me I decide what mechanical role I want the character to fulfill, then I figure out this history for the character that build to him being where he will start out mechanically, and once I have that history I can build the personality.
That is the general process sometimes other things come up like my most recently made character was because I wanted to use the PB so came up with the character around that.

There weren't the same but WoD:Combat was influenced by Street Fighter but still used standard WoD mechanics just with bells and whistles. Street Fighter made significant modifications to the base WoD system like only having one roll per attack instead of the three or four of most OWoD combat.

    • RE: Savage Worlds Rifts

All I can do with savage worlds is speak to my experience with it. In two campaigns of playing with the systems in two different settings, with two different groups of players, the stories told were fun but every time the mechanics got involved I lost interest.
Interesting bit both groups no longer exist because in each half the group loved SW and wanted to use it for everything and half the group hated it an never wanted to see it again. It and Fate seem to the the most polarizing game systems I can remember.

I agree with your thoughts on palladium, I am not really defending it as a good game, just disagreeing with your statement that SW is light years ahead of it. Palladium is a crappy rules heavy system with the only real plus being lots of neat OCCs. SW is neither light enough to be rules light and out of the way in play nor rules heavy enough to really sink your teeth into as a game. Neither one could clam to be much ahead of each other just which flavor of meh you prefer.

Still, it's light years above and beyond the Palladium native system, and no one can deny that.

I would deny this, but Savage Worlds is the one system I have played that I would flat out refuse to play again. Palladium I dislike and would rather not play it but I can handle playing it because at least c-gen is fun.
Edit to Add: My biggest issue with it is the wild die concept, since the target for most things is for giving every important character a d6 along with their stat or skill die to roll means that even with a d4 in the relevant area you succeed 62.5% of the time. For me that is too high for something you bought the lowest level of sill with.

WTF is the 8th sea? Are you hiding MUs from us?

that was one of the standard rules of WORA and definitely on I hold on to here. If I am really enjoying a game and it hasn't been mentioned here. There is no way in hell I would be the first to talk about it.

I too loved this game. Heck i even included Street Fighter NPCs into a couple of wod games, (not the big names but some of the random folks from the contenders book.)

    • RE: Original Sci-Fi?

I think one of the big issues is that everyone has a different breaking point for suspension of disbelief and it often hinges on their own experiences. For example in sci fi for me, as long as the techno-babble is internally consistent I can roll with it, but internal inconsistency will drive me bonkers.
I realize his is not true for everyone so if i am in a situation where people are discussing the nuts and bolts I basically smile and nod.

Also on the Russian ark, watch it if you have not seen it. It is one of those movies that everyone should see once. It is a gorgeous movie and the fact that is it one continuous shot is simply amazing to me. (The documentary of the making of the movie In One Breath is also well worth the watch, if only to make the accomplishment of the film itself seem more impressive.)

    • RE: Original Sci-Fi?

Kind of related to the tech thing for original sci fi for me is always the culture questions.
One of the big reasons I prefer modern or games set in properties with a lot of lore is that is makes the social RP a lot easier. In a modern game I can just look at what exists in the world around me, my character has different tastes for entertainment then I do but I can pull up a list of shows that fit a category and with a bit of wiki reading fake being a fan of them.
That is one issue I tend to run into in original setting is what would my character talk about, what is done for entertainment etc.
A lot of home brew settings miss this part which for me makes it hard to get into a character.

      @ghost said in Original Sci-Fi?:

CAVEAT: So long as they don't use the Palladium RPG System, because fuck that noise. While I don't terribly mind the percentile dice system, there is no way a MU would survive a single combat scene where 6 different PCs and multiple combat opponents each got 3+ turns per round.

Oh it would survive, everyone involved might not but the game would. I still have traumatic flashbacks to large OWoD werewolf fights.

    • RE: Young Justice / Teen Titans MUX

Not the guy in question but to my mind GLs even teen ones would be big gun heroes. Kyle barely knowing what to do with the thing took down Mongul (granted with some help from Supes) and Major Force.
At some level a rookie with a ring might fit since they would be growing into their abilities though. And Kyle was a member of the Titans team lead by Arsenal in the mid-90s.

If we are throwing out names, and including legacy heroes. You could always go with the debut versions of Infinity Inc, who were all in late teens/early twenties when that series started and add:
      Jade
      Obsidian
      Nuklon
      Fury
      Silver Scarab
      Brianwave Jr.
      Dr Midnight II
      Wildcat II
And not canon associated with the teams but in the same rough age group would possibly pull in Connor Hawke and Vibe as well.

      @bobotron
Oh I totally agree with that. I tend to be against the idea of "One Big Reason" why folks are gone because that will become an exercise in illogic if the game lasts very long. For the most part is doesn't need to be addressed at all on an IC level. Just state they are not allowed on an OOC level and move forward.
As you said it is not exactly uncommon for a comic to not address where the rest of the heroes in a the world (or in the case of Marvel's NYC the same town) are unless that plays into the story being told, (or the sales of the referenced book need a boost which is not applicable for a MU)
Of course I also see no issue with the Big guns of the setting being used for plots as needed both as assistance and rescue bait. (After all the second appearance of the Teen Titans in the Silver Age was a story where they had to rescue their mentors from alien mind control.)

@wolfs said in Young Justice / Teen Titans MUX:

@downwithopp True, but how long can you reasonably have the big-name adults away from Earth before it stops making sense? That can be a way to help start the younger teams up, but unless you go with the darker tone they're going to come back sometime.

It is comics, even if you say they are all dead, them all staying dead for a lengthy time would break any sort of genre credibility. 🙂

The grocery store has the liquor holiday gift sets out now.
Yay, booze I would buy anyway but with glassware .... and the occasional gift for fellow booze hound friends.
Yes well over half my glasses have some sort of liquor brand name on them and I am fine with that. For parties I just make sure everyone has a matching brand.

      I'm confused.

Talking about opening a new original sci-fi MU* on MSB results in some people having to change their underwear, but in reality, actually opening such a game results in little more than yet another empty server. What gives 🙂

You are confusing what people want and what people will go out of their way to actually do.
I am as guilty of this as anyone else. If you asked me if I would like a Rifts game using Fate I would salivate for it in theory; in fact I have yet to try the one that has existed for a while. The biggest reason is I have limited time and the games I am on are known quantities to me while a game I theoretically would like better also contains uncertainty to actual results.

    • RE: Character Information: Wiki or Mu*?

Yeah I have no philosophical issue with wikis, my answer for where info should be is honestly both. I want in on game so if I need to know something in a scene I don't have to leave the window to find it. Nothing takes me out of my characters head faster than leaving the window. I can read or do off computer things and stay in the characters head. Hell in college I could take a smoke break and talk to people RL and stay in the characters brain, but the second I open a web browser my brain shifts to out of character mode.
Though if it is down time looking for info the wiki is usually easier to navigate than mush commands.

Yes they existed but I was not pestered about them, where as today if you do not make a wiki you do get asked a lot about not having a wiki, granted often with offers to assist in the making there of.
