RE: Fifth Kingdom
Totally off topic but this is one thing that bugs me, People should not say Lord of the Rings is Low magic it is not it is very high magic but the magic is rare in the world. I would consider the Sovereign Stone RPG setting (original edition not d20) to be more low magic while magic is very common in that world, literally any character can learn it, it tend to me on the low powered end of things. LoTR magic might not be common but when it shows up it shows up big.
I generally think we should describe magic in settings on a dual axis one being rarity the other being power when it shows up. For example Common Low would be Sovereign Stone like I mentioned, Uncommon High would be LoTR, Forgotten Realms would be a good example of Common High. Can't think of an Uncommon Low at the moment, maybe the Six of Swords books. -
RE: FS3
I will agree with that. the first game I played that sued it mentioned the systems name but had no details on how it worked. I only found the documentation by going a google search.
I didn't that because I am a systems nerd and really wanted to know how it worked, I can see players less inclined to go digging not bothering to go the extra steps.
I would also greatly recommend anyone game using the system include a like to the documentation in a news file. -
RE: FS3
If you are expecting or encouraging people to have a spectrum of skills to represent broader interests then it becomes a trap and actively punishes people who do not do number crunching but just assign numbers that make sense for their character.
Every game system I have ever seen punishes players for diversifying. Every system as skills that are wildly more useful than other, (9 times out of 10 these are combat and noticing stuff) Even if you have a linear c-gen and xp system, there is little reason not to max out what will be used, max here either being systemic limits or the limits those running the game choose to enforce, and spending points away from maxing those areas is to your determent because regardless of theory in actual practice certain things will be used more in the course of play as the people who run things focus on the stuff they enjoy and think is important.

Re: Why separate cities
No one will know until it's tried.I am not saying not to try it, but to have a plan in place to mitigate the dilution of the player base, right now the plan seem to be people will make alts. that might happen that might not.
It is not like games with segregated areas are new, look at pretty much every space game, you tend to run into either a crap ton of thumb twiddling while nothing happens on the planet you are stuck on or transportation gets handwaved to ridiculousness.Right now the best thing to app would be an resources five mortal cause they are the only thing with the ability to get to where the rp is.

Let's put it this way, they've been talking about Evennia for years now, and yet I've never seen a successful Evennia mush. They may be out there, but I've never seen it myself.
Arx runs on Evennia I believe.
Edit : Sorry posted as I read and did not realize I was beaten to this.

@ThatGuyThere Alts. 30 people can have 3 characters each, and if something isn't happening in Wolf Town, they can maybe find a scene in Vamp Town.
Not all players will make all possible alts, many prefer fewer characters for management reasons others because of a dislike for one sphere.
While I definitely agree that allowing those who want to do so, I would not assume all would. -

My point is dead is dead. It doesn't matter how much it's dead, just that it's dead. An exceptional success is an exceptional success for everything else.
But exceptional success doesn't equal dead. Any human sized character will survive one exceptional success blow if that blow was 5 successes.
Exceptional Successes really only have meaning on non-combat non-extended rolls, for combat or extended roles the number of successes matters very much even if both numbers would count as an Exceptional Success. -
RE: Classic World of Darkness
Question: if you don't want cross over why include both games? This leads ties into player base split issue I mentioned in regard to multiple cities. How is 30 people on a game only 10 that a PC can interact with any different from just having a 10 person game?
An unrelated question about mortals, would they be allowed to move between cities or would they app in with the condition of being tied to one city or another? -
RE: State of Things
@Rook
I would say all caps is yelling yes, Bold would be raising voice with emphasis to me. though in this specific instance Ghost does have points where he both was in bold and all caps which is most definitely the text equivalent of yelling. -
RE: State of Things
@Ghost said in State of Things:
@Roz Look, just because I throw out some sarcasm or outline things in bold doesn't mean I'm yelling, nor does it mean that I'm upset in any way.
Except it kinda does bold means heavy emphasis, so while not exactly the text equivalent of yelling it would be at least the equivalent of raising ones voice.

RE: What does advancement in a MU* mean to you?
For me it depends on the game, Mage I absolutely want muck around in the high level stuff, D+D and most fantasy settings I tend to lose interest in the early mid-level stages. (Basically when the numbers break down to the point where your character has nothing to worry from standard soldier types, so in d+d usually around 8th level. )
As far as favoring certain builds that to me is a non-issue as long as said builds are open to all and the conditions that lead to favoring them are publicly known.

RE: Classic World of Darkness
I think the biggest issue with the multiple cities would be the fragmentation of the player base, if you have 30 players but split up between three cities that turns into three mini-games with 10 players each. Allowing alts will help with that but not everyone will make an alt in every sphere.

RE: What does advancement in a MU* mean to you?
@Arkandel
I agree for the most part but with one caveat, using the mage thing for example, I have no problem if someone running a game decides hey I am running a low power level (for mage) game so capping spheres at 4.
I don't think any game should necessarily make make the ultimate, in your words, powers available but I do thing games should communicate when they are not going to use the full scope of the system.
Another example would be if you were using a MUSH using the D+D system there is nothing wrong with capping PC level at 12, or any other number, but you should communicate that to your perspective players clearly and directly both to so they can decide if that changes their desire to play and so that they can make build decisions based on that endpoint. If class x has the most awesome 13th level ability you know from the jump that the ability won't come into play so while you can still play class x there is no surprise aww crap I can never get that ability. -
RE: RL Anger
If you truly don't understand why speaking up (even without DIRECTLY SPEAKING TO THE MAN
See this I do not understand at all. If he is in the wrong (which if he was smirking at them in disapproval, then he is definitely 100 percent, with out a shadow of a doubt wrong) he should definitely be spoken directly to, if not there is not need to speak.
You seem to say there is a need to play cheerleader for the couple, which i would not so, not for a hetro couple not for a same sex one, not for strangers not for my best friends. One of my firmest, most steadfast rules is other peoples relationships are not my affair.
As far as talking to the couple, they are on public transportation, I know I don't want to talk to anyone while on public transportation about any topic let alone a relationship I am in. I want to sit there looking straight forward waiting for my stop. -
RE: RL Anger
. You aren't part of that couple that are actively enduring that microaggression. (Or may not be a microaggression,
This is exactly my point dude might not be doing anything you even acknowledge this, why is his mental health any less valuable then the couples. And to me yes intent definitely matters, if someone acts to hurt another persons feelings I am all for blaming that person, if a persons feelings randomly get hurt by an action with no malice, (or in the actual situation being discussed some dude who might have been completely zoned out not even noticing the couple) then I my reaction is a solid 'meh don't care."
I in no way support any sort of discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender, or race but right now the sum total of what we know about the situation is dude on a train had a face @Arkandel didn't like.
We don't even know if the couple in question noticed dude or were in any way at all affected by it. -
RE: RL Anger
@Meg
I disagree, if the dude actually says or does something, then yes light into him with extreme prejudice.
What are described was : well, it's hard to say what he was doing, which was my dilemma. He was smirking for most of the trip - but that could have just been his face.
As someone who has gotten shit many times in rl for "having a scowl on my face" when that is the honest resting form of my face I don't really condone the starting of shit for a look on the face unless it is known it is being done intentionally. Now if you have seen the dude before and his face is not like that normally then yes say some shit, but if you have not you are starting a random witch hunt because you don't like the way his face looks, you know the exact opposite of progress. -
RE: RL Anger
Dear MSB, what was the correct response here? (I did nothing)
Generally I am the opposite of conflict avoident but in this case I think the right answer is to do nothing.
One if he never said anything it could just be his face has a resting smirk. This should shock no one but my resting facial expression leads people to think I am angry and upset when I am emotionally neutral or bored. So unless he actually said or did something it could be something like that so any response is actually starting something where there was none. -
RE: Difficulty of single-player computer games
@Rook
I think it comes down to how much would the loss the thing impact your life.
Without video games I would save some money and watch more TV but not much would change.
If i stopped the other forms of gaming it would be like when I stopped collecting comics there would be a social impact, I would lose contact with friends who I am mainly connected to from gaming or at if the contact was maintain the relationship would suffer. That is where the difference lies to me.
To me there is a big difference between a career and a hobby so I agree with you on the cop thing, and would say anyone who makes a living playing video games is definitely a gamer whether they call themselves that or not. -
RE: Difficulty of single-player computer games
To me the difference between gamer and someone who enjoys playing games is determined by the amount of resources and effort they put into the hobby.
I am definitely a gamer in the board game RPG sense. I will buy both Board games and RPGs I know I will likely never play because they are neat, or I want to look over them, or to support the creator. I talk with other board/rpg gamers a lot about said games, and frequently visit the FLGSs in my town to see what is new or if anything used has come in that I want.
While I have enjoyed video games since I first got an Atari 2600 in fourth grade when I had no clue what an RPG was and my conception of board games was on the Sorry and Monopoly level, but i have never been into them in the same way. I enjoy them casually and wouldn't go into a Video game store just to see what's new, when I go into one i go with the purpose to buy a specific game. So for these reasons I would not consider myself a video gamer but someone who enjoys video games.
