I am not a big wiki person, but I think Cobalt summed up what I think is needed from an end user point of view.
I would also add not Wikia. I am glad it does not seem to be part of the debate here but I have been on games that used it and I hates it. I would play on a game with a wikia wiki but I would not make a char page there or really use the wiki.

Does it feel weird when they change who plays Spider Man in the movies, or turning Thor into a woman?
And for Thor: Yes, to me at least. Thor is a specific guy! It's not his superhero alias, it's his actual name. Like, literally his mom was bitching at 'Thor' to go wash his hands before dinner when he was a kid. </rant>
To keep the right to my that guy name, it would be his stepmom, he was raised by Frigg(a) who while being Odin's wife was not his mother either in myth or in Marvel Comics.

You forgot the best evidence that the world is round; the one the ancient Greeks used, math. You can measure the angle we can view the sun at different places to be different at the same time, and the difference could not be accounted for solely by the variance of the sun's position.
While that does not prove the Earth is round it does prove the surface is curved and not flat. -
RE: Also seeking new mu*
@cirim13
My honest suggestion would be Bump in the Night. It is WoD but mortals only so less learning/refreshing memory overhead.
I have no personal experience with the place but it gets generally good word of mouth on here. Mp clue on how active it is at the hours you mentioned but might be worth checking out.
On the cowboy front I know of nothing. -

It is true that Case, Bobby and the solo whose name escapes me right now were all white
Molly Millions, aka Blondie, aka Debbie Harry.
Shame on you for not remembering this bit of trivia from the 80s.
Molly was a Street Samurai/razorgirl. There was the dude that rescued Angie in [redacted].
Also we should mentions the coolest a.k.a she had, the Steppin' Razor.
She also makes a good counter point to the original complaint about all white males as she was white but not a male and figured in (and in my opinion was the most rounded character in) multiple Gibson stories. -

Yeah, but it's ... it's Seattle. c.f. Columbus, Ohio. It's central to quite a few major urban areas, but it's Columbus, Ohio.
I think a huge reason of why Seattle is grunge. SR 1 game out in I think 89 possibly 90 or 91, either way it came out when bands and a music style based in Seattle were not only starting to get huge they were starting to get huge with a disaffected sub-culture, Grunge really didn't hit mainstream music stations til around 92.
Now that I think about it you could make the argument that instead of cyberpunk that the first edition of SR was more cybergrunge. It lacked a lot of the punk ethos that you see in Gibson's writing.

RE: Where have all the crunchy games gone?
I don't really consider Shadowrun crunchy I would put it like WoD in the medium crunch bracket. When I think High crunch I think things like, Traveler, GURPS, Champions/Hero, and anything GDW published. (Games Design Workshop). and then for the truly crazy level of Crunch Tri-tacs hit location chart, which starts with rolling a percentile to determine which general area of the body you hit then another roll to get which part of that part you hit. On the human head there are 36 possible hit locations in the system. (Note I never actually played this system though the game I bought that used it i did love the setting for. )
While Shadowrun and WoD can both go more crunchy if the person running things uses a lot of modifiers neither tends to be played that way.
I will say SR is generally perceived as more crunchy but I think that has a lot to do with its focus on action, where WoD even in the table tops I have been in has more of a culture of a lot of rp while minimizing the actual use of the system and more of a focus on scheming and manipulation that while there are systems for that the tend not to be used as rigorously as systems in Shadowrun for things like rigging or hacking. -
RE: Where have all the crunchy games gone?
@mietze
Wow I have always considered GURPS one of the crunchiest systems, especially c-gen or anything with vehicles.
I would put WoD right about the same level as Shadowrun and CP2020 though less the Twilight 2000 or any GDW product. -
RE: Where have all the crunchy games gone?
Not sure if but I am wondering if crunch both preference and definition of what is crunchy varies based on how we came to MUSHing for example i came from a table top background and was introduced to mushing by other members of a college RPG club. So when the topic is crunch I compare the systems on games to those in the various table top options as a frame of reference.
Now I can definitely see someone who came in from forum play by post or other forms of non-systemic RP thinking WoD is rules heavy because it is far out of the realm of what they are used to. Video game RPG would fall into this too because while they have complex systems besides the character building parts of it the games tend to keep things under the hood so to speak.
This may be completely off base but I am curious to see if there would be any correlation between RP origins and preferred crunchiness. -
RE: Where have all the crunchy games gone?
I tend to think of WoD as a medium crunch game, about as crunchy as I would use on a mush but not crunchy for a table top system.
Though the general trend in the industry is less crunch. Compare D+D 3.5 to D+D 5th ed for example. One of the stated goals was to make it simpler and that has definitely happened.
My personal preferences is on the crunchier side but really I can enjoy any mechanics that are engaging. Take Feng Shui the mechanics are definitely not crunchy, but they are engaging to me. Where Traveler is almost the utmost in high crunch and I have always thought the mechanics we not engaging despite me liking the setting and loving c-gen.
For me it also depends on the genre as well, for example I would expect a lot more crunch in a Mecha game then I would in an urban fantasy setting.
And I implied in my first setting the medium matters a lot as well, online mechanical interactions tend to take longer then those in table top so I would seek sleeker systems online for that reason. -
RE: 7th Sea 2nd Edition
I definitely prefer first edition to second mechanically. the roll and keep systems took some effort to get used to and was slow at times especially when learning the ropes or teaching it to someone new, but it felt more game then the current system does.
Granted I am not a big fan of the trend towards narrative mechanics which I think the second edition moves towards. Besides Fate I don't think there is a narrative system I like, most hit a space where the mechanics still slow things down too much without being engaging as a game. The exception to this in my opinion being Fate and the old Over the Edge system.
I love the setting of both editions but if I ever ran a game I would likely still use first edition rules for it. -
RE: Retail "Horror" Stories
I worked a bit of retail the worst horror story was from one of the holiday seasons I worked at Macy's. Macy's had a lot of sales that ended at 11 am sometimes 10 the whole "doorbuster" thing. Well I was working in housewares the day of one of these sales and it was a good one, so things had been hectic til the sale ended at 11. Then the department got fairly quiet. The one lady walks in goes to one of the items on sale picks it up this is like 11:45 well after the sale is over. she heads to the check out station for the department. Normally two of us there but the other person and gone to lunch after the sale ended.
She waits behind one person and steps up, i scan it tell her the price expect to get the money and move on with my day. She has a fit that wasn't the sale price she said. I say sale ended at 11 it is now almost 12. She tried the I was in line at 11 I get the price, which is the correct policy at the time the computers were even set to give out the sale price 15 minutes after the official end to cover that. I respond with, no you just got in line behind the person who just left. He harrumphs and says, Well you can change the price. I know I could have but at the time I was annoyed by her tone and body language and she was not gonna get it for the sale price from me. I do the standard retail line of no I can't the computer won't let me. this goes back and forth for a bit. And then she wants to talk to my manager. So I call for manager of that floor, (multi-floor store each floor had and assistant manager and the store had an overall manager) assistant manager comes over talks to the lady then to me. assistant manager looks at the record of sales on the computer sees the gaps in sales after the rush from the sale ends and is like, I am sorry ma'am the sale is over. Lady still won't leave she fumes at bit and then demands to see the store manager. Now mind you this is now well past the point of time when I should be at lunch. We wait about 30 minutes for the store manage to show up, lady pacing around me and the assistant just chatting about random stuff. The other person for the department arrive and start to help the back log of other customers that started to build.
Store manager arrives. now the lady lies her ass off now she was in the store at 9 blah blah blah, Oh and I and the assistant manager were very rude. I admit I was curt during the whole time but also polite, and the assistant manager was one of the sweetest people ever. The manager then listens to what I and the assistant say and check the log for herself and is like. I ma sorry ma'am the sale appears to have been over. So lady makes a big huff and storms out, I return product to it's place.
then comes the happy ending, shortly before the end of my shift a couple hours later same lady walks in picks up the same things walks to the counter to buy it sees it is me grumbles a bit but does pay the actual price this time. -

angry? Say and feel things because you actually feel and care about them. That, I think, is worth a lot more respect, and will make you feel better to boot.Who says that does not go along with bitching. When I complain about something it is because that is how I think and feel I don't randomly put thing on here to be negative, in fact in the very thread you pulled my this place is for bitching post, I have also said positive things. Including that i thought staff was handling themselves mostly well in that thread.
@surreality summed up the reasons for this place a lot better then i did, but yeah it is a place that is open air discussion sometimes that discussion is course. That is hardly unique to this place or MU * ing, I have watched chaired professors swearing at each other over cocktail discussion that got heated at a department Halloween party.
I would say everyone on this board cares about MU * ing, or did at one point, when you discuss things you care about sometimes things get heated, that is human nature.
Do I char about the reputation number, no not in the least, do I care about the discussions that take place here, yes otherwise I would not take part in them. -
RE: The Shame Game
For me I agree with Sunny it is less about shaming and more about exposing the info, now Glitch also have a point that is is more punitive then rehabilitative but I see that as a feature not a bug. I don't think anyone will ever change their behavior based on the thread here, at best they will be sneakier or more cautious about it.

I think this is a dangerous mentality to adhere to.
How is being polite and respectful a dangerous mentality to adhere to? I never said people didn't have a right to complain, or that staff shouldn't consider the complaints objectively and decide if there's truly a problem here. But ultimately staff decides what kind of environment they want to have.
Because the phrase "voice complaints politely and respectfully" or sentiment along those lines is used as polite short hand for "shut the hell up" often enough that many people will default to reading it as such.

RE: The 100: The Mush
@Sunny said in The 100: The Mush:
Sure, but shrieking bloody murder over a personal preference is ridiculous, and while trashing places is the thing, the expectation that folks who ARE having fun should just shut up is also ridiculous.
I have never said anyone should shut up.
But literally every abuse ever on a game can be covered under their court so leave an don't complain.
I am in favor of the clashing arguments provide both sides to the readers and let the readers choose.
So far I think the defenders of the game are doing a fine job, and staff seems for the most part to be well meaning, but I fuly endorse those who are making the complaints having the ability to make them.
Now If I was staff I would ask for this thread to be moved out of advertising so they could put up an new ad and have this go to a discussion section but that is more housekeeping then anything else. -
RE: The 100: The Mush
@faraday said in The 100: The Mush:
If you don't like it, cool. Mark your disagreement politely and vote with your feet. But respect that staff is devoting their own time and money to running a game for the entertainment of others. That doesn't mean all others. It means others whose vision aligns with theirs.
this is where i disagree here, on games sure behave but off games trash them til your heart is content, the public will decide who is in the right if anyone, the answer is frequently no one but that is beside the point.
Staff does what they want on their own game and that is their right but places like this board exist for the reason for calling them out for it.
Other wise this board serves no purpose then an advertising venue.
I have no real side in this current argument but while if you don't like it leave is very good advise there is no reason not to express your opinions on the matter in places devoted to it. -
