@arkandel do yourself a favour and stop after completing season 1. The next season is really poorly done-it feels like an AMC show now.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
I'm getting tired of our Office Martyr. Seriously, if they would stop complaining and do their work, they'd be done their work and would have time to complain about how they're out of things to do. This week, I heard them complete the 40 minute story about how over worked they are to every single person in the office who isn't a supervisor. That's 400 minutes(yes, I timed the speech, sue me) they could have spent doing their two hour task instead of complaining about it. Yes, I also know how to sort 40,000 items. You go to the data tab in excel and click sort, you're not moving mountains here. And stop 'working through lunches,' nobody is tricked by this except the new hire who thinks that's what we do. Ugh.

RE: Recipes!
Going from a bunch of dried goods and a can of tomatos to delicious chana masala in under an hour is the magic of instant pot. I don't really use a recipe, but if you know pretty much any beany curry recipe, an hour will do it from dry, which means you're saving a few dollars per dish right off the bat.
Also, bean chili is stupid easy to wing. Dried beans and lentils are crazy cheap.

RE: General Video Game Thread
Late to the Battletech wagon, but is it weird that my Locust Pilot has the most kills out of my lance? That thing running behind people and shooting them in the back is just too much fun.
edit Nevermind. that last mission had the dodgiest of medium mechs and the most indestructable of Warboy cars.. My pilot is taking an 82 day nap now.

RE: RL things I love
Went to Ikea to get the frame for an adjustable/standing desk. I got the cheap crank one because it felt solid, and after spending the afternoon drilling the hell out of my old drafting desk which was too wobbly for a battlestation, I'm rocking a desk at a comfortable height, and I can stand up when I want to. It's pretty boss. Also got an ergo assessment at work, and they boosted my desk there up two inches and got me a new chair.
I'm looking forward to this brave new world of good/decent posture.

RE: Plot session duration
@arkandel said in Plot session duration:
That's a factor I hadn't considered. People in automated combat games with experience playing in non-automated games as well, how big a factor has this been for you?
It's really night and day for the plot runner. The few plots I did run on Battlestar went very smoothly, partly because the players were all systems go(I had amazing buy in from players that I really haven't seen elsewhere), and the system really supported you. But even on games like any of the star wars mushes I've played on, or shadowrun, you can't do a quarter of the things in the same amount of time, even if the players are all hyped and into it.

RE: Plot session duration
- This is tough. I think it's more about pose wait time than the length of the plot. Like, if one player consistently takes 10 minute to type one line on their turn in combat, that's too long, especially when they had 4 other players each taking 5-10 minutes to do their turn. I think this is what keeps me from going back to Shadowrun, I really liked that game, but jesus, driving from one side of town to the other would be a 3 session affair.
Anyways, in most systems, if things keep going at a happy clip, I'm pleased to put in about 4 hours before my back starts aching.
-
I think if you're doing a combat in a non automated game, you can count on one hour per player. If you're throwing a plot twist at them, double it. FS3 throws these estimates out the window, because things go so smoothly, and you don't really have to wait on Slowey McBrokenfingers typing 1 wpm to keep things going.
-
I think this would be a fantastic idea.

I the majority of my experiences, paused scenes never really get finished with the same roster that started them. Lots of this is on me, and my regimented bedtimes to combat insomnia, but many people only have a day or two where they can set aside 4 hours for a plot. In a perfect world, a plot would be designed in a way that people could exit without it breaking the scenario, like don't have people in an escape room or something like that, have them driving/running/riding to the next scene in the plot, someone could get stuck in traffic or something.

I usually do some sort of cognitive dissonance retcon. Where's dude? Nah, dude wasn't here the whole time, bad guy has wounds from ... a rough sparring session with his mooks, yeah, that's it!
Or, you know, they step on a waterslide pit trap and are gone all of a sudden. One time in a star wars mush, someone said they left their iron on or something and left a scene where we were shooting stormtroopers, I thought that was pretty funny.

RE: RL Anger
I don't care enough to really be 'angry,' more a puzzled sort of thing.
I clicked one of those links on youtube that went to a youtuber gossip video about controversies and what not between channels. One of the clips showed a youtuber pulling in 136k a month. Holy shit. Who knew ads that never make it past adblock payed out that well? Those guys, I guess.
Anyways, I took a peek at one of these top youtubers and was even more mystified that people sit through any of these videos.
I guess this is what getting old feels like.

Saw The Towering Inferno the other day.
Richard Chamberlain really nailed playing a shitheel in that movie, it was great. Also watching Steve McQueen and Paul Neuman trying to out macho each other was a real treat as well.
I remember seeing this as a kid in the theater. Scared the shit out of me. Monster movies didn't bother me at all but 'realistic' disaster movies always bothered me.
Wow, I'm amazed, was there an intermission? It's like a 3 hour movie, I couldn't imagine that in a theater as an adult, never mind being a kid.

RE: What isn't CGen for?
@bad-at-lurking said in What isn't CGen for?:
Backgrounds are always the part, as a player, where I feel like I have to either apply my professional bullshitting skills and write half a page of copy that sounds like it has a lot more content than it does or risk staffers wanting to know why the character isn't more fleshed out.
Back when I bothered with games that required backgrounds, I would copy/paste a standardized background and change the name to the new character. Then, once through CG, I would promptly ignore the background and develop the character through play. Most of my successful and memorable characters had no meaningful background when getting to the grid.

RE: General Video Game Thread
I picked up Battlestar Galactica Deadlock last night. It's a lot like the table top Attack Wing or X-Wing but without character cards, I'm liking it!

High quality apps would be considered with Tier caveats (akin to TR/FC) for players.
Lost me right here.

Solo was a bland forgettable movie as a Starwars film.
I had a sneaky suspicion last week when I read an article claiming everyone who saw it thought it was super duper awesome.
It looks entertaining, and I really love how the new EU feels like a table top RPG session, I'll probably really like it, despite it not being Shakespeare.

RE: Good TV
@sunny It is pretty great. I find Johnny very interesting and it's frustrating to watch him struggle to redeem himself when he has no tools for doing so. The actor is deadpan gold.

I loved all of that group.
For real, I want to see their origin story in a movie.
