      @jibberthehut

      I had a raccoon come INTO MY APARTMENT while I was home, once. Opened the sliding screen door, walk to the fridge, open the fridge, and start eating eggs. I heard something and went and looked and the thing CHARGED ME.

      It was really cute tho.

      @apos said in A (Mildly Complete) List of Current Games:

      I'm optimistic, really. We have challenges, both cultural and technical, and an often hostile community that doesn't really provide a good foundation for games to succeed, and knowing all the shortcomings, I'd expect I would be pessimistic about the future, but I'm just not. There's a lot of roleplayers out there in newer generations, and MUs as a format still offer some things other games just can't. Brand new players are rare, but they do happen. I'm newer, after all, relatively speaking.

      Yeah. Can confirm, new players incoming. I need both hands to count the number of actually new new players I've met in the last year or so, and that's just me personally having directly spoken to them. I've heard of a bunch more. They're out there. It's not in the numbers it used to be, no, but it's not the molasses trickle some people seem to think it is, either.

    • RE: Mushing and Dating/Relationships

      Current partner, I met mushing. I have met people over the years a wide variety of ways, and I can say without question that I would never date a non-gamer again. Not that I care if we do the same types of games, but somebody who has absolutely no interest in the same kind of entertainment / doesn't have the context for what gaming entails? Ugh. Unless I come to a point where I can give gaming up (ahahahahaha), no.

      This isn't really a problem for me, mind. I can't think of anyone in my social or regular-professional circle that isn't a gamer in some fashion -- all of my coworkers, most of my work friends, and so on (I am in IT, so there's that). I pretty much don't know any non-gamers well except for one of my sisters and her husband. They don't game. We don't hang out.

      How much PVP do you intend for there to be?

      I literally have no answer for 'games in general' beyond 'it depends'. Specifically for Sacred Seed, if you're planning on discouraging PVP completely, then I think Open Sheets are the best. If you're going to allow any PVP at all (including allowing for political action against one another for rank/reputation) then semi-open.

      I think full transparency is a great thing for PvP games as well - as it removes any appearance of wrongdoing, favoritism ("staff like X so they gave him more stuff"), etc.

      To put it a different way, a bad player will figure out a way to deduce information using OOC means one way or the other. They'll analyze someone's dice in PrPs, ask innocent sounding questions and file the answers away, etc.

      Open sheets ought to flatten the field and remove a vector I always thought was ineffective - the OOC masquerade - from the equation completely.

      That's nice. I prefer not to spend hours adjudicating whether or not so and so came by the knowledge of a secret IC, or if they read it off of somebody's secrets part. There's no reason a couple of key factors cannot be hidden (perhaps with a /share command) to prevent many hours of stress, drama, and headache on staff's part. If you are including PVP in a game, you are already requiring a lot of trust and cooperation on the part of the players. I think it's an absolutely terrible idea to give them access to one anothers' story secrets in a PVP environment, because now not only do you have to add an extra thing for staff to police (and it sounds like such fun, doesn't it?), but your players now have to be absolutely SURE they came to the 'right' conclusion, because they had OOC knowledge of the situation, rather than legitimately being able to put information together.

      Completely open sheets in a PVP environment adds an enormous staff overhead.

      He has one he's made that is pretty much the best thing ever. Not only is it good for formatting, I was as a DM able to read a scene some of my players did without me on the game, later. From interacting with the code and the object. Right on the damn game.

      @bobotron

      I don't think 'because alts are distractions' is a valid point in relation to alts or alt limits, because if they don't allow them, people will just play on another game. I don't disagree that an alt limit is good, but I think discussing it for reasons that do make differences is probably more helpful.

      Are you interested in discussion of possible other options, or are you very set on only those listed above? I'm kinda with @Bobotron on this, but I don't really want to break out into discussion if you're already mostly set. And if you are, that's not a bad thing!

    • RE: Why did you pick your username?

      I ran the vampire sphere at Ashes, and thought the name Sunshine was appropriate. I don't even remember how it transitioned, but there was cross-over between RL and mush friends for a while and 'Sunny' made a transition. Then I had several friends that originated online over the years that ended up palling around with my mother, and they referred to me as Sunny, and so my mother got it, aaaaand...

      Yeah. So, that's the story of how people who do not even know what RP is call me Sunny IRL.

      @admiral

      While I do agree that more folks can behave maturely and in a relaxed fashion than can't, I don't agree that it's always due to favoritism issues. I think that it's just that most people are not the awful beasts we make them out to be a lot of the time, and if you have high expectations, people tend to meet them.

    • RE: Random Idea - Multi-Themed MUX

      I have a site where an absolutely amazing wonderful person has coded like a million and one different systems right into it, for all the various tabletop games I and other people run. Having it all on the same server and not conflicting is about as possible as coding all the complexities of the systems in the first place. There are switches and flags and things to determine which bit of code handles a given character bit, but it's not (to my understanding) a LOT of extra steps, once you get the handlers down.

      There's really no need to insult me. This is the constructive area, and I was just offering input. I'm sorry you don't like my word choice, but yes, to me, it IS weird and uncomfortable. I wouldn't use the words if I didn't mean them. I even just explained why.
