Consumer reports will likely be your best one, though you may have to visit the library to get full access for free. When I was shopping a few years back, i saved about 50% of the sticker price for my TV by getting the dumb version instead of a smart one. I have enough old computers laying around that I could use one of those for streaming, so YMMV.

RE: Good or New Movies Review
Black Panther was sweet. Wakanda Q stole the show.

RE: Good TV
@arkandel It had its ups and downs, the second half of the season was much more fun than the first, the last episode felt very tacked on, though.

RE: Encouraging Proactive Players
@arkandel Maybe give players the ability to create objects, but they have to have an attribute with a PrP log URL tied to them?
I'm sure a coder could tell me how that could go all sorts of wrong.

I used to run plots all the time, on several games, when I was just a player on those game. I can explain the two things that have /dramatically/ cut down on my desire to do such.
- The lack of staff doing something too.
When I get the rug pulled out under me it really kills any desire to do anything further. If I can't actually do anything to create a /lasting/ story, then it kills desire too.
This is one of my peeves when I run things. I love running plots, but when it takes 3 months for staff to process rewards like stolen cars, loot, whatever, it really takes the wind out of my sails. Especially when I see other players running around with all the toys in their inventory, I know someone's processing something somewhere!!
Before I got stuck in the timesink of conan, I was contemplating starting my own google doc for rewards tracking and just running my own campaigns without any staff involvement.

RE: Encouraging Proactive Players
I remember when Denver had a submit a PrP log, everyone gets 20k and 2 karma thing going, and things were hopping for a solid 4 or 5 months. My group eventually ran out of steam, but being able to run a plot and know there was going to be some loot afterwards really helped.
BSG Unification has essentially the same thing, where you can run a mission if you want without having to get editorial oversight, too, and I found that was great for keeners to get things rolling.
What doesn't help is having to submit a plot in advance, wait for approval, and then try to find time to do it.

RE: Good or New Movies Review
I just finished As Above So Below, and I really can't think of another movie that seemed so much like a D&D dungeon crawl. It's got dismal ratings, but from an RPG background, it was a great movie!

@ganymede Why don't players fuck non-social system rolls (or don't do so as badly)?
They do, quite often in my experience. They'll nuke another player with a devastating attack, then after you lay there, mutilated and in pieces, they'll say, "Oh, I just wanted you to be knocked out, please don't die, I don't want to be known as a PKer" UGh, then why did you attack me with your full power rolls using a machinegun?

RE: Skin Bug
Every time I see this thread on my unread list, it makes me think of a hookworm picture I saw earlier this month.

RE: Social Systems
I mainly use social systems to deal with stuff that is boring to roleplay out. Haggling for donkeys is one. I remember joining a group back in the day, and two players spent 3 hours haggling over donkeys. Two players started playing super mario cart, and I fell asleep and woke up at 2 am to discover they had settled the price for one of the donkeys, and I decided it was time for me to go home, because fuck that shit.
I like a fairly simple social system, like what Savage Worlds has. If things get roleplayed well, I'll assign bonuses.
I love reading through GURPS social engineering, but have never used it in play, though it does inform quite a few of my on the fly calls in other systems.

One word: Triss.
For whatever reason, Witcher 3 didn’t let me romance her. And in the end I’m glad, because Triss was a whiny do-gooder, and I’m always too nice in all the games I play. The way I played, tho, Yennifer was a complex and interesting woman.
I had the opposite experience. Triss was all about getting her hands dirty and getting things done. Yennifer was pretty awful and bragged about using mind control on Geralt to get what she wanted.

RE: ROGUE: It is coming...
I would love for this to be set in the Lords of the Expanse setting, just post Return of the Jedi. The Empire is fractured and many factions vie for power as the rebels try to consolidate the New Republic.
The great houses of the Expanse try to get their tendrils into every pie, while romantic youths fight ultimately pointless(but high prestige) duels with lightsabres found in secret armouries that were hidden from the Empire.

RE: World of Darkness -- Alternative Settings
On my way to work today, I thought it might be fun to do a World of Darkness Captial Hill.
What kind of crazy bills would a bunch of vampires pass?

don't try to play the witcher 1. I got all 3 and figured I'd start there and I made it about 10 minutes before I had to bail. Apparently in games 2 and 3 the devs learned how normal people play games, so that's good.
Solid advice. Witcher 1 has a massive fun tax for the first third of the game. Once you break out of the city, it's good times, but oh man that initial investigation is a chore and a half. It took me 3 installs and 4 years to get through it.

RE: General Video Game Thread
@faceless The starvation is gory as fuck. My character got hungry once and his stomach exploded, tearing him in half!!
And what are you doing?! Drop everything and play the witcher!!

RE: General Video Game Thread
@ortallus That sounds pretty cool, I was wondering how siege engines would work.
I feel bad playing early access, I'm finding a lot of 'placeholder object #2103s.'
I have a feeling combat gets better when your ping isn't 180, though.

RE: General Video Game Thread
A friend of mine bought me Conan Exiles and I've been playing it quite a bit the past couple of weeks.
It's like a more frustrating Minecraft, but with schlongs flapping in the breeze while you rapidly die of dehydration and starvation. People keep saying the combat is good, but it's mostly cheesing with arrows and rockem sockem robots.
Somehow I'm having a lot of fun with it. Definitely one you have to play with friends on a private server, though. I would lose my mind on a PvP server where some griefer can just show up and knock down your castle.

My thoughts?
- FOCUS ON ONE GROUP. All PCs must be Resistance + allies, or all PCs must be First Order + allies. Do not do this FORTY BILLION PLANETS AND FIFTYSIX FACTIONS stuff. Engineer your game to provide easy RP for your players, also making it easy for them to FIND RP, and easy stuff for your staff to run.
Yes. This.
Focus upon one sector at maximum. There's no need to have a million planets built, if people want to go out of sector, they can RP room it. Even in a sector, you could potentially have dozens of planets, but it would be within the realm of possiblity of going from one side to the other for a scene without getting too hand-wavy about.
